IBM InterConnect 2012 will host Business and IT leaders from across the globe and focus on 10 Hot Topics, 2 of which will include content on why clients are looking for a Smarter Infrastructure: Transforming Critical Business Processes and Gaining Competitive Advantage Through Software Innovation.
With regards to gaining a competitive advantage through software innovation, business leaders are looking for software solutions that enable them to differentiate their products, services, & business models as part of their systems and physical infrastructure. Top-performing organizations are delivering business innovation with reduced cost and improved speed and predictability by leveraging a smarter approach to software delivery. Software innovation is becoming synonymous with business innovation. And with this comes the challenge of maintaining appropriate controls, while accelerating delivery. Just like with the transformation of critical business processes, a smarter infrastructure is at the core. For more information on this hot topic please go here.
To dive deeper into Smarter Infrastructure content at IBM InterConnect 2012, I interviewed Rich Caplow, IBM Director of Smarter Infrastructure software.
2 things come out loud & clear:
In the first, you see this everywhere. I like to think of it as the conversion of "dumb iron" into intelligent assets. Take the automotive industry, you have previously discussed the Chevy Volt & it's 10 Million lines of code in it! (blog). Or sensors on rail track that is integrated into asset management software to enable remote monitoring for more cost effective preventive maintenance, instead of reactive maintenance. We also have clients that use satellite telemetry for monitoring maintenance issues on aircrafts in flight, to enable pre-planning of maintenance for when an aircraft lands. This allows the maintenance crew to take advantage of the time an aircraft is planned to be on the ground & not impact flight schedules.
For the shift from managing assets to managing the services provided by an asset, we have clients that provide jet engines "by the hour". Their clients don't care which aircraft is working or not working, they are just paying to have an operational aircraft. In this case, service level agreements are put in place and our clients are incented to have reliable aircrafts and penalized when they don't. Maximo for Service Providers can help clients that provide services.
With more and more intelligence and innovation in the world, there is an ongoing need for business models to shift to enable increased efficiencies and reduced costs. Smarter infrastructure solutions are instrumental to this shift and will be highlighted in 2 of the Hot Topics at InterConnect:
Will there be any clients speaking about Smarter Infrastructures at InterConnect?
Yes, Mustafa Aziz, from Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA), who has spoken at our IBM Pulse events before will participate on a customer panel, discussing the importance of a smarter infrastructure at ADWEA. Recently ADWEA has integrated intelligent technology with Maximo to enable remote monitoring of street lights. The data from the sensors can not only turn lights off when no one is on a street to save energy, but it can also provide information to determine the best times for street light maintenance so as to minimize the impact to traffic. This is a great example of a smarter infrastructure solution enabling smarter cities.
