Database errors: Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server Description: There are no rows in the current fetch buffer. Cause

The workaround is to use the SQL Native Client driver (SQLNCLI) in place of the SQLOLEDB driver.
(Note: You may also need to enable the MS SQL 2000 compatibility mode in SQL Server 2005. For information about compatibility modes in MS SQL Server, please refer to Microsoft documentation.)

Environment

Microsoft SQL 2005 Server

Resolving The Problem

Steps: To update the driver, the following steps are required:

1. Download and install the Microsoft SQL Native Client Interface package from the Microsoft website:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=DF0BA5AA-B4BD-4705-AA0A-B477BA72A9CB&DisplayLang=en

2. Install the driver onto ALL Planning server machines and the SQL server machine.

The steps for configuring Cognos Planning to use the new driver are as follows:

3. Open the Contributor Administration Console
4. Click on Tools -> Change Planning Administration Domain
5. Highlight the PAD being used and click configure
6. In the Configure Datastore Server Connection window click Advanced
7. In the field Provider Driver change to SQLNCLI
9. In the Change Planning Administration Domain window click Select to apply the change to the PAD
10. Expand Datastores and Application folders until all applications are visible.

For each datastore:

11. Click on each of the datastore(s) in turn.
12. Click on the Configure button on the right hand side of the screen
13. In the Configure Datastore Server Connection window click Advanced
14. In the field Provider Driver change to SQLNCLI
15. Test Connection and click OK
16. You will get a message saying do you wish to apply this setting to all child applications; click Yes.

You may also have to change the Provider Driver for each application, by clicking the individual applications, selecting Configure and following steps

13 to 15 above.
17. Close the CAC

Note: for version 8.1 and earlier, follow steps 18 - 21 (below). As the COM+ component service is not present for version 8.2 and later, if you are using version 8.2 or later, simply re-start the services in Cognos Configuration, and continue with step 22.

18. Stop the Cognos Enterprise Planning (cer4) service (Found in Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services)

19. Stop the COM+ Planning73 component service (Found in Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Component Services; then Console Root -> Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> COM+ Applications; Right click
Planning73 and select Shut down; the ball in the box will stop turning when the service is stopped.)

20. Start the COM+ Planning73 Component service (Once the ball in the box has stopped turning, Right Click and select Start.)
21. Start the Cognos Enterprise Planning (cer4) service.

Web:

22. Open the web browser and go to the following page:

http://{machine_name}/cognos/contributor/planning44.asp

23. In the field Provider Driver change to SQLNCLI and click OK<
24. You should then get a message saying that the configuration is successful, click OK
25. You should now be able to save the data in the Contributor web.
