Error description
For PureApplication System release v1.1.0.4, when a linux OS Virtual Machine (VM) is initially deployed, it has the hostname set to the short host name where the value is the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) for the host (only the host name is shown and not anything after the first dot in the FQDN is shown). If the "hostname" command is issued after initial VM deployment, the value shown would be the same as if the "hostname -s" command was issued. After the VM is rebooted, however, the host name value is then set to the FQDN and this is what is displayed when the "hostame" is issued again. This can cause problems if a DB2 instance was created and the host name used as part of that initial configuration was the shortname and later the VM uses the FQDN value. The error starting DB2 is: $ db2start SQL1042C An unexpected system error occurred. SQLSTATE=58004 or SQL6048N A communication error occurred during START or STOP DATABASE MANAGER processing.
Local fix
A work-around for this issue is to modify the "/etc/sysconfig/network" configuration file and change the "HOSTNAME" setting in that file to be the short host name (to be consistent with host name first used on VM deploy) rather than the FQDN. The VM should then be rebooted after that for the change to take effect.
Problem summary
The PureApplication System Red Hat Update Infrastructure Service was replacing the host shortname with the fully qualified domain name during a virtual machine reboot which can cause start failures for installed products expecting the shortname.
Problem conclusion
A fix is being provided in the the IBM Red Hat OS Update Service pattern type version 1.0.1.1 provided with PureApplication System version 2.0.0.1 to remove the code replacing the shortname during the virtual machine reboot.
