Description
The server is the primary component for storage activity in IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager (TSM). In case of server failure, TSM clients may not be able to perform storage operations. These High availability policies ensure that clients remain seamlessly connected and can perform operations without interruption.
With current business demands and solution needs, High Availability has become an important feature for any application or solution service. This includes critical storage management and access to information that has been backed-up or archived. This package provides a set of scripts, policies and instructions that can be used with IBM Tivoli® System Automation for Multiplatforms to facilitate the high availability needs of the IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager (TSM) servers.
The server is the primary component for storage activity in IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager. In case of server failure, TSM clients may not be able to perform storage operations like archive/retrieve or backup/restore. These High availability policies ensure that clients remain seamlessly connected and can perform operations without interruption.
Normally in case of a TSM Server failure, attached TSM Clients would not be able to complete storage operations storing information in logs. When the TSM server becomes operational, it checks the recovery log resuming any failed tasks logged during the server failure. Though the TSM server takes care of data integrity and consistency for all recovered transactions, this poses a concern of servers not being available. This can be resolved by making the TSM server environment highly available with the help of using standby TSM servers running on a different machines that TSM clients can connect to upon a server failure.
Using Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatform and the policies provided here, the TSM server can be made highly available without the need for manual intervention. These policies use a virtual IP address for the server to which the TSM clients can connect in lieu of the physical IP addresses of the server machines. Upon a server failure or service interrupt, Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms can then re-route communication to another currently active TSM server. Tivoli System Automation for Multiplatforms also automates sharing the server instance data and recovery log data with active TSM servers to ensure that data integrity and consistency are maintained.
