Certification - System x and BladeCenter

ATTENTION: Revised Sales & Technical Certification Tests available now!

This certification validates the skills required to gather requirements, plan, design, install and maintain System x servers. This certification is targeted to IBM Business Partners, Advanced Technical Specialists (ATS), Field Technical Sales Support (FTSS) professionals, System x Service Specialists, IBM TechLine professionals, and System x customers. The Certified Specialist should have six to twelve months of hands-on experience assessing hardware requirements. The candidate must be familiar with Operating System Knowledge (Microsoft Windows Server, Linux, AIX, VMware) AND a knowledge of the BladeCenter technology, systems management, and basic networking (including OSI sublayer).

To attain the IBM Certified Specialist - System x Technical Principles v9 certification, candidates must pass 1 test.

  1. Test 000-081 - System x Technical Principles V9

This exam immediately replaces test 000-071 IBM Certified Specialist - System x Technical Principles v8 which has been permanently withdrawn.


The System x and BladeCenter Sales Expert is qualified to successfully deal with complex customer opportunities. The successful candidate will have advanced skills for recognizing and developing System x and BladeCenter market opportunities, user requirements, drivers and inhibitors to the sales cycle, and typical buying behaviors. The Sales Expert should have a minimum two years of hands-on experience in the System x marketplace selling customer solutions, utilizing sales tools and resources, developing and delivering solutions, and managing customer relationships. The candidate must be familiar with all System x and BladeCenter family members and the markets served.

To attain the IBM Certified System Expert - System x and BladeCenter Sales Expert V2 certification, candidates must pass 2 tests.

  1. Test 000-076 - IBM System x Sales V5
  2. Test 000-083 - System x and BladeCenter Sales Expert V2


This certification validates the skills required to plan and design, install, configure and maintain IBM BladeCenter systems. The IBM BladeCenter Certified Expert will provide solution design and implementation support for those who work with the IBM BladeCenter technologies. This certified person will also work to provide longer-term technical support activities including problem solving and resolution.

To attain the IBM Certified System Expert - IBM BladeCenter� V5 certification, candidates must pass 2 tests.

  1. Test 000-085 - IBM BladeCenter V5
  2. Test 000-081 - System x Technical Principles V9


This certification validates the skills required to plan, design, install, configure, and maintain IBM High Performance servers. The IBM Certified Expert will provide solution design and implementation support. This certified individual will also work to provide longer-term technical support activities including problem solving and resolution.

To attain the IBM Certified System Expert - IBM High Performance Servers V4 certification, candidates must pass 2 tests.

  1. Test 000-086 - IBM High Performance Servers V4
  2. Test 000-081 - System x Technical Principles V9


How do these revisions affect tracking my progress within the eXpert program?

New Tests 081, 083, 085, 086 have been added to the eXpert website tracking feature. All eight tests will be displayed until either 1) Tests 071, 301, 078, 084 certifications expire two years from now or 2) you pass Tests 081, 083, 085, 086. After such time, your previous 071, 301, 078, 084 records will be deleted.

Your skill level will be determined by counting your existing Test 071, 301, 078 and 084 certification(s) UNTIL 1) Test 071, 301, 078 and 084 certifications expire or 2) you declare that you have passed Tests 081, 083, 085, 086.

WITHDRAWAL: IBM Certified Specialist - System x IBM Director v5.2 v1

Effective July 31, 2009, exam has been withdrawn and not replaced.

How does this withdrawal affect my skill level within the eXpert program?

This withdrawal will affect only those who�ve passed Test 079 as of 7/31/09. If you have passed Test 079, this certification will continue to count towards your skill level until your Test 079 certification expires two years from the date you achieved your certification.

After such time, your 079 record will be deleted and skill level will drop one level.
