Meet the speakers

Rory Campell

Rory is the head of IT Law with Northern Ireland IT, IP and Media specialist lawyers Forde Campbell LLP. Rory qualified as a solicitor in England in 1996 with the international and City firm Trowers & Hamlins, and from 2002 until 2007, acted as the firm’s lead ICT lawyer. Rory left London to join Forde Campbell in 2007, building up the firm’s IT and IP practice to its current client base of over 250 public and private sector businesses in Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the USA. Rory is a Steering Committee member of Digital Circle, Northern Ireland’s digital media industry body. Separately, Rory is the author of the Intellectual Property Rights chapter of Local Government Contracts and Procurement (Tottel 2007), and of Northern Ireland: a proposal to deal with illegal file-sharing in the UK (IAEL 2010).

Gerry Vahey

Gerry is a Tax Partner in Mazars. He specializes in advising companies in the ICT sector on the most appropriate method of structuring their tax affairs. Gerry has extensive experience on the most appropriate methods of structuring the ownership of intellectual property, in particular the taxation of patents. With extensive experience in transaction support, reconstructions and amalgamations, succession planning and the tax efficient structuring of the sale and acquisition of companies, he also has significant experience in advising companies on raising capital through the use of certain tax designated and non-tax designated sources of funds.

John Lewis

With over 30 years of entrepreneurial experience between Paris, London, New York, and Boston. John Lewis knows how to build a startup. He has lead several enterprises, and has also founded nine different companies. Four of them sold as independent entities and two were bought by competitors.

John teaches portfolio management and entrepreneurship at several universities in Paris. He previously was a professor at HEC and is currently a professor and the co-director of the Portfolio Management Masters program at IAE Gustave Eiffel. He helped start the accelerators Le Camping and Dojoboost and has been an organizer and mentor for StartupWeekend and Next.

Lucas Meijs

Lucas C.P.M. Meijs is a professor of volunteering, civil society and businesses at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (RSM), and a professor of strategic philanthropy at ERIM's Erasmus Centre for Strategic Philanthropy (ECSP).

Professor Meijs' current research focuses on issues related to strategic philanthropy, volunteer/non-profit management, corporate community involvement, business-society partnerships, voluntary energy as a natural resource, re-embedding voluntary energy, student-volunteering and involved learning (life-long development by volunteering). Before joining RSM in 2003, he was a guest researcher at the Centre of Philanthropy and Non-profit studies at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of Georgia's Department of Political Science as well as its School of Social Work.

Professor Meijs teaches strategic philanthropy and several business-non-profit relations courses at the master level, as well as service learning, strategic philanthropy and social entrepreneurship at the bachelor level. Learn more at his website.

José Miguel Herrero

José is the founder of Big Sur Venture Partners. Knowledgeable of European and US markets, he has extensive international experience in starting and running businesses of diverse sizes including managing a US Nasdaq listed company ($3.5B). He has founded, co-founded and otherwise led numerous technology enabled products and services companies. In addition, he has significant M&A experience and founded and sold an M&A firm focused on technology and innovation.

José Miguel received his BSEECS and MSEE degrees from Santa Clara University in California and his MBA from Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

Thomas Mathiasen

Thomas is an Innovation Consultant with solid performance in development and implementation of Innovation Strategies for customers with 25 years experience with international product development in the field of Biotech and Food Technology. He leads the development and implementation of strategies for managing and capitalizing on the knowledge and ideas in a company, Intellectual Capital Management and Technology Management. He is a certified IP auditor on IP processes and cultures.

His specialties include developing and implementing innovation strategies and culture, tools for innovation, creativity, processes for focused effort on developing and applying the creative idea.

Helena Collin

Helena Collin has a solid background in the ICT business with her focus on incubating, developing and commercializing startups to become future success stories. Her expertise has mainly been given to enterprises within the areas of gaming and social media.

As a former studio director at the Interactive Institute (a Swedish national IT and design research institute) and a member of the Europrix jury, she is now fully committed to find and accelerate companies with growth potential.
