Esri Maps for IBM Cognos

Tab navigation

Esri Maps for IBM Cognos is a web-based solution that extends the IBM Cognos Business Intelligence (BI) Reports product.  New capabilities include:

1.     Quick, easy integration of rich, detailed Esri global maps directly into IBM Cognos BI reports to enabling map visualization of key business data.

2.     Powerful, bi-directional communication between Esri map objects and IBM Cognos report objects (e.g., lists, crosstabs, charts) for a unified view of both geographic and business data.

3.     A zero-coding solution for IBM Cognos report authors to leverage in-place resources avoiding, “roll your own”, integration.

4.    A 'map in the app',  raising the usefulness and insight gained from Cognos dashboards.

Esri Maps for IBM Cognos is for Cognos Reports authors and consumers.  The solution is applicable cross-industry (e.g. retail, utilities, telcos, insurance, health, energy).

Esri Maps for IBM Cognos is in a new category of solutions from Esri called “Location Analytics”, encompassing solutions that spatially-enable (visualization and analytics) business analytic systems (BI, CRM, collaboration, productivity), providing access to not just mapping, but also spatial analysis.

  • + Functional details

    Key Esri Maps functions include:

    • Report authoring: the solution enables integration of maps into IBM Cognos reports, connection of the location-based data in those maps to the business data in the report.
    • Drag-and-drop wizards that define key linkages and establish broadcasts from features in the map to BI objects in the report.
    • For report users, a Map Viewer enables capabilities including:
      - pan and zoom,
      - point and polygon pop-ups/hovers with data,
      - drawing of buffered rectangles, radial selections, poly-lines, and polygons to filter data shown on the map
      - llive, 2-way link that to multiple displayed report objects
      - query of map services; access to geocoding and routing services

  • + Business problem

A ‘picture is worth a thousand words’ :  Esri Maps for IBM Cognos drives greater understanding of business data, yielding new views of data, and better understanding of trends and patterns.

It is not that a business dashboard does not convey all data as a result of a query and is therefore insufficient.   Location analytics and map visualization add a powerful, additional element to dashboards and reports providing a key geographic context to the meaning of information.

  • + Business opportunity

When placed into the context of maps, business data reveal patterns, trends, and insights impossible to spot in standard graphic report objects (e.g., lists, histograms, pie charts, etc).    Information on a map goes beyond data presentation:  patterns in data emerge- consistent groupings of data yield 'hot' and 'cold' spots and/or anomalies otherwise un-noticeable in standard reports.   Going beyond data presentation, mapped information begins to tell stories, yielding greater insight and understanding.

For example, visualize and analyze business performance on a map by using business data measures to thematically shade (color-code) regions and/or points, directly in the context of a business application.

Drive advanced analytics using maps with a bi-directional connection between shapes and points on the maps and the data in your report objects. For example, click or select a region or set of regions, and automatically update multiple lists, charts, and graphs based on the regional context or vice versa.

Employ map-based analytics to drive business analytics. For example, in a business-continuity type of analysis-  issue a spatial query for every historical earthquake epicenter where business facilities are located which are greater than 'X' magnitude and update the business data based on a radial selection around each earthquake epicenter found.

Map visualization of information is more accepted and more comfortable than ever before.   Esri's location analytics and maps provide rich visualization of information across nearly all industries, their workflows, and their dashboards-  from public health and retail customer analytics, to energy utilities and financial institutions.

  • + Return on investment

The primary beneficiaries of map visualization and location-analytic queries in reports and business dashboards are:

    - BI Director/Manager
    - Line of Business VP/Director
    - BI professionals (data modelers, report authors)
    - CIO/VP IT, CMO
    - BI users/ consumers

Rich map visualization of Cognos reports and dashboards will have immediate, positive effects on the workflows and responsibilities of these individuals.   A demo or short POC makes the return on investment easy to see.   The user experience and increased knowledge gained with maps is a quick and obvious decision.  With a low cost-per-seat to extend Cognos Reports with Esri's solution, the value to analysts, managers, and consumers is rapidly recoverable.

  • + Competitive advantage

    Important solution differentiators are:

    • Full leverage of IBM Cognos platform values, including Security, Prompting, PDF rendering, burst as PDF, deployment, scalability.
    • Linked map data to one or multiple business measures using a wizard style interface
    • Defined broadcasts from Map regions and/or points to other report objects
    • "Advanced" map service layers added, like, weather, traffic, geo-located social media inputs.
    • New spatial report drill-down tools (sweep select, radial select, buffered lines and polygons) for data queries
    • Drill-through business queries to detailed maps
    • A wide array of Esri global base maps (Street Map, Satellite Imagery, Canvas, etc...)
    • Deployed on cloud-ready IBM Pureflex System, for outstanding on-premise, private cloud capability that is highly optimized, administered centrally, and easy to load-and-go.
