EMC Data Domain deduplication storage systems provide high-throughput, disk based backup. Using TSM software with Data Domain, you can eliminate data redundancy – in line during the backup process. You can retain more backup data on disk and cost-effective replicate data across a WAN for disaster recovery

EMC Data Domain reduces the amount of disk storage needed to retain and protect data by ratios of 10-30X and greater, making disk a cost effective alternative to tape. Data on disk is available online and on site for longer retention periods and restores become fast and reliable. Storing only unique data on disk also means that data can be cost effectively replicated over existing networks to remote sites for disaster recovery (DR) and consolidated tape operations

Data Domain can be used concurrently as NFS, CIFS and VTL (STK L-180 and LTO emulation)

  • Functional details

Scalable deduplication storage. Aggregated throughput of up to 140.8 TB/hour and up to 114 PB of logical storage per system

Easy integration. Qualified with Tivoli Storage Manager throughout VTL and NAS (NFS/CIFS)interfaces

Multi-site disaster recovery. Network-efficient replication for disaster recovery, remote office data protection or multi-site tape consolidation

Ultra-safe storage for reliable recovery. Data Invulnerability Architecture provides continuous verification to detect and protect against data integrity

Operational simplicity. Easy to install and manage resulting in low administrative and operational costs

  • Business problem

    • Backup window shrinking while amount of data to protect grows

    • Unreliable restores and disaster recovery mechanisms

    • Backup typically represents a factor of 4–30-times production capacity

    • Edge data is mission-critical, but not protected

    • Virtual machine sprawl creates protection challenges

    • Server consolidation creates high server utilization leaving little bandwidth for backup

    • Costly backup replication across WAN

  • Competitive advantage

EMC Data Domain Stream-Informed Segment Layout (SISL). Scaling architecture that optimizes deduplication throughput by minimizing disk accesses and footprint. System throughput is CPU-centric, not “spindle bound”

Data invulnerability Architecture. Advanced data verification and data integrity including RAID 6. Continue detection, healing and write verification ensures backup and archive are accurately stored, available and recoverable

Data Domain Global Compression technology combines high-speed, inline deduplication with local compression, after granular, variable segment comparison of data. Only unique segments are written to disk

EMC Data Domain replication technology transfers only deduplicated and compressed unique changes across network requiring a tiny fraction of the bandwidth, time and cost compared to traditional replications
