TBMR allows users to perform a bare machine recovery of their system direct from a Spectrum Protect (TSM) backup. Critical systems are protected from the consequences of physical damage, human error, or system failure. Users can recover their protected servers to any point in time provided by TSM as well as schedule simulated recoveries. TBMR is re-sold globally by IBM and its channel partners as the recommended system recovery solution for TSM. It’s currently available for Windows, Linux, Solaris and AIX operating systems.

TBMR compliments a TSM backup and recovery strategy by offering a solution to recover, migrate and clone your operating systems without the need to perform a separate backup. Maximising your recovery flexibility by supporting recovery to dissimilar hardware or virtual machines which in turn will minimise business disruption.

Key highlights

  • Restore TSM instantly to physical, hypervisor, and cloud environments, including Azure and AWS
  • Leverage existing investment and restore TSM without additional management or infrastructure
  • Recovered server is identical to original, including data, operating system, and applications
  • Recover multiple servers simultaneously and rapidly to meet agreed RTOs
  • Scheduled automated recovery simulations with full reporting to satisfy regulations
  • Supports system recovery, migration and replication for Linux and AIX on Power Systems

  • Functional details

TBMR is a bare metal restore software for Windows, Linux, Solaris and AIX systems which stores the machine hardware configuration on the network or together with the backup. The files required to run the operating system are stored in the TSM Server storage pools during normal TSM client backup.

TBMR uses the TSM BA Client to integrate with the ITSM Server during the recovery. If the ITSM Client node fails due to a hard disk failure, after replacing the hard disk, TBMR uses the hardware configuration information to partition and format the hard disks and uses the ITSM BA client to restore the necessary files to build the operating system, from the ITSM Server storage pools.

  • Business problem

TBMR eliminates the need to manually rebuild and patch the operating system, install and configure applications and user information by recovering this data from the TSM storage pools using one set of procedures reducing both the administrators time during the build and requirement to update many pages of procedures.

  • Business opportunity

In business, time means money and businesses cannot afford to lose their servers even for a brief amount of time. Reinstalling any operating system and configuring it requires lots of time and skill. Windows is no exception and so is Linux, Solaris and AIX. TBMR addresses this by reducing the downtime dramatically and hence minimising the losses.

A TBMR recovery of a typical Windows 2003 server can be achieved in under 10 minutes. People with Windows installation experience would appreciate how significant this is!

    TBMR is now available for Linux (RHEL amd CentsOS, 4,5,6,7 SLES 10,11,12, 12.2, 12.2 Power 4-8), Solaris (9 - 11.3), AIX (5.3, 6.1, 7.1, 7.2) HP-UX on request.

The Linux, Solaris and HP-UX TBMR are based on the rock solid technology used in CBMR for Windows, which is now used by many thousands of customers worldwide. Because TBMR uses the data already backed up by the TSM BA client, there is no need to perform an extra backup. This will save considerable amount of space, both within the disk and tape pools.

  • Return on investment

Considering the time IT administrators spend performing Disaster recovery test, server migrations and operation failures TBMR offers a 12% per annum ROI, and covers the cost of purchase in just 2 years. When considering the cost of major disasters this increases 214% per annum ROI and the costs of purchase are covered in just 4 months.

Full ROI information and calculations are available from our website.
