Solution name :

GiAPA (Global i Application Performance Analyzer) V04

Solution description :

GiAPA collects detailed performance data for jobs and tasks every 15 seconds, plus call stack and file usage info for all CPU intensive jobs. This data enables GiAPA to • automatically pinpoint reasons for the vast majority of performance issues • produce merely any kind of reports or graphs of resource usage and trends

The GiAPA video will in 4 minutes give you a first introduction to some main features. It may all sound too good to be true - but it is true, see our references. Please follow the video up with our technical presentation (18 minutes) and/or let us show you what we can do for you - for free!

GiAPA (Global iSeries Application Performance Analyzer) assists you in getting the most out of your computer resources.

Using less than 0.1 % CPU, GiAPA's comprehensive data collection can be allowed to run 24/7. You will then always have the data needed for tracing use of resources – when, how much, by whom, for what, etc.

Operations department use all this data to monitor the every day usage of the server more efficiently. GiAPA can

  • tell which jobs have bad response times / unreasonably long run times
  • tell which users cause delays and why
  • produce reports and graphs on any type of resource usage by time and/or job, user, application, …, summarized or detailed.
  • show trends for applications, LPARs, or the entire server per week, month, quarter, year, etc.

Development / programming use GiAPA’s exception reports  to tell

  • which applications run inefficiently
  • what the problems are, and how the application can be improved to run efficiently
  • where changes should be made (thread level call stacks analysis is made down to program statement number)
  • which files could be accessed in a more efficient way

GiAPA turns any operator or programmer into a "performance expert", able to use and interpret the results of GiAPA's automatic analysis of all this data, collected every 15 seconds and including which programs and files are used and how.

  • Functional details

GiAPA’s performance data collection retrieves details of all jobs and tasks every 15 seconds, thereby using less than 0.1 % CPU. Additional call stack and file usage data is collected automatically for any job exceeding user-defined limits for CPU percentage or Disk-I/Os.

The performance collected is stored in a compressed binary format so only a minimum of disk space is used. GiAPA expands and analyzes this data transparent to the user, automatically keeping additional details of jobs suffering from or potentially causing performance problems.

Numerous exception and detailed reports and graphs are available, detailed or summarized, standard or user defined.

  • Business problem

Unsatisfactory response times or batch jobs using maybe hours can become a problem for running the business. To analyze the complex server workload of today and identify which (often minor) changes that can remove such a problem is normally considered a very complex task requiring expensive external experts. The GiAPA software automatically collects and analyzes the data needed to pinpoint bottlenecks and inefficiencies.

  • Business opportunity

Use GiAPA to ensure that the IT part of your business runs efficiently!

Today we are all to some degree depending on IT. Fortunately most applications run well, but it cannot be avoided that programming options sometimes get combined in an unfortunate way leading to unsatisfactory performance.

Having many employees frequently waiting at work stations due to long response times or waiting to receive results of batch jobs running “for ever” is severely counterproductive.

Many installations “solve” application performance problems by purchasing additional hardware, thus hiding the inefficiencies rather than removing them. Reasons for this choice are most often

    • lack of experience in and time for using existing performance analyzing tools
    • fear that collecting sufficiently detailed performance analysis data will be a heavy burden on an already overloaded machine
    • fear that it can be difficult to document the problem(s) towards the supplier of inefficiently performing standard software

Because it is using less than 0.1 % CPU, you can afford to always letting GiAPA collect detailed performance data for all jobs and tasks. When a performance problem is experienced, the collected data for the time of the problem can be expanded and analyzed, and user friendly reports can then be requested to document the reason(s) for inefficiencies.

In surprisingly many cases it only takes a small change of a program or of the run environment to cure the major part of the run or response time delays.

  • Return on investment

ROI is obtained in different ways. Telling you how to achieve improved application performance, GiAPA may

    • cause your staff to wait less for response / output from the server
    • assist you in avoiding inefficiencies leading to a need for premature hardware upgrade costs

(Additional benefit: Expensive external performance experts will probably not be needed.)

For operations, less time will be needed on the every day control of the use of the server, and on creating reports and graphs showing usage, trends, etc.

Several of our customers had return on investment within the first week - see more details in the “Case Stories” on www.giapa.com .

  • Competitive advantage

GiAPA removes the complexity of application performance analysis

Most iSeries professionals consider application and job performance optimization a complex task, often requiring expensive external experts. Most tools in the market today are complex to use and create a significant systems overhead.

However, GiAPA’s automatic data collection and analysis makes it easy for the average operator, programmer or systems analyst to locate and diagnose the vast majority of performance inefficiencies.

And, it bridges the communication gap between the Operations and Development departments as they can use the same tool with the same data to resolve performance issues.

GiAPA assists you in using your existing computer resources in an optimal way, without the need to always purchase additional hardware to meet the growth of users or applications.
