IBM Cell/B.E. University Challenge 2007 OFFICIAL RULES

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.
Open to college and university students in the fifty states of the United States and the District of Columbia, Canada(Excluding Quebec), and Brazil 18 years of age and older.

  1. Registration Web site: In order to enter this contest, you must be 18 years of age or older and a college student as described in Rule #5. The contest offers two challenges with an option to participate in either of the two with separate prizes awarded for each challenge. There is no requirement to participate in Challenge 1 before entering Challenge 2. Students may access the Registration Web site on or after February 5, 2007.

  2. Challenge 1[Cell/B.E. Trivia]: To compete in Challenge 1, the student must take an on-line quiz which can be accessed at the Registration Web site. Challenge 1 is open from February 5, 2007 12:00 AM Eastern Time until March 31, 2007 11:59 PM Eastern Time.

    Students must follow all instructions and complete the quiz in its entirety by answering all questions correctly. Once a student passes the quiz, he or she cannot take the quiz again. Students who do not answer all questions correctly the first time may continue to submit responses until the Challenge 1 deadline.

    The first 300 students to answer all questions correctly will be awarded a t-shirt. Once the Contest sponsor has received 300 quizzes with correct answers to all questions, a notice will be posted on the Web site. After that time, and until March 31, 2007, students may still take the quiz, however, they will not receive a t-shirt when answering all questions correctly.

  3. Challenge 2[Top Innovator]: To compete in Challenge 2, students must write a software program in one of the categories listed below. Challenge 2 entries may be submitted starting February 05, 2007, and must be received by the Contest sponsor no later than July 5, 2007 at ET 11:59 PM. Participation in Challenge 2 requires downloading and installing the IBM Cell Broadband Engine Software Development Kit and IBM Full-System System Simulator for Cell Broadband Engine™(Cell/B.E.) on their system.

    Challenge 2 categories are as follows:

    Application Solution Category - Application-oriented solutions where Cell/B.E. Processor is the main enabling technology. Examples of application sectors include but are not limited to:

    • Seismic applications
    • Financial Services
    • Medical Imaging
    • Electronic Design and Automation
    • Content Creation
    • Visualization and Management
    • Digital Video Surveillance
    • Computational Biology and medicine
    • High Performance Computing
    • Simulation

    Cell B.E. Based Operating System Category - Heterogeneous multi-core system software technology that enables Cell/B.E. Processor resources to be used and managed effectively. Some examples include but are not limited to:

    • Kernel extension
    • Process scheduling
    • Cluster Scalability and system management
    • Real-time servic

    Programmability Category - Concepts and implementations that enable the Cell/B.E. programmer to efficiently map workloads to the heterogeneous multi-core architecture of Cell/B.E. Processor. Some examples include but are not limited to:

    • Emerging Computational Model
    • Programming models and frameworks
    • Languages
    • Development tools - Debugger/Profiler/Language Compiler and translators
    • Portability tools

    Challenge 2 entries must include:
    1) a 1-2 page high level description of the code and its attributes
    2) submission of a proof-of-concept code including binaries
    3) any other supporting materials - additional specifications or detailed documentation

    All entries must be compiled and tested using the Cell/B.E. SDK and the corresponding Cell/B.E. System Simulator. Refer to the Registration Web site for details.

    All submissions will be acknowledged by e-mail. Entries will be judged by a panel of qualified judges (described in Rule #4) beginning on or about July 6, 2007. The winners will be the entrants receiving the highest scores based on a uniformly applied point system as follows:
    1. maximum of 60 points for innovation
    2. maximum of 45 points for performance
    3. maximum of 35 points for scalability
    4. maximum of 30 points for applicability for real world applications
    5. maximum of 30 points for clarity and documentation
    6. maximum of 25 points for usability

    In the event of a tie, the winner(s) will be the entrant(s) receiving the highest scores for innovation. If there is still a tie, the winner(s) will be the entrant(s) receiving the highest scores for performance, except in Wisconsin, where duplicate prizes will be awarded.

    Upon conclusion of Challenge 2, the winners of Challenge 2 will be given remote access by the Contest sponsor to Cell/B.E. Blade technology, and will be invited to optimize their winning code submissions, at their option. Remote access to the Cell/B.E. Blade technology will be available to the Challenge 2 winners through October 30, 2007.

  4. Judges: The panel of judges will be comprised of members of the academic community, IBM technical experts as well as IBM Business Partners. Judges' decisions are final in all matters relating to the contest.

    To avoid conflicts of interest, judges who are employed at universities will not review or judge entries submitted by students of the university at which the judge is employed.

  5. Eligibility: Contest is open to undergraduate/graduate/PhD. students who are enrolled full-time or part-time at a two-, three-, or four-year accredited college or university in the U.S., Canada (excluding Quebec) and Brazil. Each student may submit one entry only in Challenge 2 of the contest. Proof of academic enrollment may be required. Employees of IBM, Einson Freeman, Inc. and judges of "Cell/B.E. University Challenge 2007"; and the immediate family members and household members of each are not eligible to enter the contest.

  6. Submissions: The contest will be conducted in English and all submissions must be in English. Code submissions are limited to the following programming languages: C, C++.

    Submissions should be accompanied by documentation specifying the development environment details (hardware platform, operating system and version, programming language, version, IDE, etc).

    In addition, any shared libraries which are required should be specified explicitly. Any required platform libraries should be freely available. Contest judges will not purchase any development environments or libraries for the purpose of evaluating entries.

  7. Challenge 1 Prizes (300): One t-shirt will be awarded to each of the first three hundred students to answer all Cell B.E. Trivia questions correctly. Approximate Retail Value: $15.00 USD, each. No cash value or substitutions of the prizes except by Contest sponsor.

    Challenge 2 Prizes (4): A total of 4 Challenge 2 prizes will be awarded. The actual prizes awarded will differ based upon a student’s geography and whether they qualify for the Grand Prize, Second Place Prize, Third Place Prize, or Fourth Place Prize.

    Challenge 2 Fourth Place Prize (1): One Prize will be awarded to the student whose entry receives the 4th highest score.
    Challenge 2 Third Place Prize (1): One Prize will be awarded to the student whose entry receives the 3rd highest score.
    Challenge 2 Second Place Prize (1): One Prize will be awarded to the student whose entry receives the 2nd highest score.
    Challenge 2 Grand Prize (1): One Grand Prize will be awarded to the student whose entry receives the highest score.

    The following Challenge 2 prizes are for winning students in the U.S. and Canada(excluding Quebec):
    Challenge 2 Fourth Place Prize: $2,500 USD

    Challenge 2 Third Place Prize : $5,000 USD

    Challenge 2 Second Place Prize: $7,500 USD

    Challenge 2 Grand Prize: $10,000 USD

    Taxes on all prizes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the prize winners, except for prizes awarded in Brazil for Challenge 2 winners(if any), where the taxes are included in the retail value of the merchandise.

    By accepting prizes, winners agree to release and hold harmless IBM and its subsidiaries, affiliates and related companies and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, including but not limited to Einson Freeman, Inc. (the “Contest Parties”), from any and all liability, loss or damage of any kind arising out of or in connection with winners’ participation in this Contest, or with respect to awarding, receipt, possession, use and/or misuse of any prize, or participation in the Contest or in prize-related activities.

    BY ACCEPTING PRIZES, WINNERS EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE CONTEST PARTIES HAVE NEITHER MADE, NOR ARE IN ANY MANNER RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY WARRANTY, REPRESENTATION OR GUARANTEE, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, IN FACT OR IN LAW, RELATIVE TO PRIZE.

    Except where prohibited by applicable law, by accepting prize, winners consent to the use of their name, likeness, and biographical information for advertising and promotional purposes worldwide without limitations and without additional compensation.

  8. Notification: Recipients of t-shirts in Challenge 1 will be notified immediately upon passing the quiz and will be required to provide shipping address and verification of eligibility. Challenge 2 winners will be notified via email on or about September 05, 2007 and will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability/publicity within 7 days of notification (except where prohibited) or prize will be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate winner on the basis of the criteria set forth herein. Incomplete registration information for Challenge 1 or 2 will void eligibility for the contest.

  9. Licensing: By submitting entries in Challenge 2, the entrant agrees to license his or her code under any of the OSI approved licenses, all of which are available on www.opensource.org.

    Further, the entrant agrees to post his or her code on www.sourceforge.org and provide IBM a link to the posted code.
    Entries must be entrant’s own original creations, must not infringe on third party rights, must not have won previous awards, must not have been posted on another Web site prior to submission and must be suitable for publication.

    Entrants must complete and submit the Certificate of Originality, which must be reviewed and approved, prior to the entry being considered. Winners may be required to sign an additional affidavit/license (except where prohibited) to this effect.

  10. Sponsor: Contest Sponsor reserves the right to cancel or suspend the contest at Contest Sponsor’s discretion, including for reasons such as viruses, bugs or other causes beyond Contest Sponsor’s control corrupting the administration, security, or proper judging of the contest. If Contest Sponsor detects harmful system activity, harmful network activity, or use of the systems for activity beyond the scope of the contest, Contest Sponsor reserves the right to remove system resources or to eliminate a student from the contest.

    Contest Sponsor and its authorized submission site provider are not responsible for technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by July 5, 2007 on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination thereof including any injury or damage to an entrant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from playing or down loading any material in the promotion.

    Submission of an entry constitutes your acceptance of the official rules of the contest. Entries are subject to verification and will be declared invalid if they are illegible, mechanically reproduced, mutilated, forged, falsified, altered or tampered with in any way. Entrants agree to abide by the Contest Rules and the decisions of the independent judging panel, which are final.

    Any attempt to deliberately damage any web site or to undermine the legitimate operation of this promotion is a violation of criminal and civil laws, and should such an attempt be made, IBM reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law.

  11. Winner Information: For a list of winners, visit the Cell/B.E. Web site after September 06, 2007, or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: IBM Cell/B.E. University Challenge 2007, P.O. Box 151, Edgewater, NJ 07020, to be received no later than August 11, 2007.
