IBM is accepting proposals for the 2007 IBM Innovation Awards, an international award competition offering faculty the chance to receive cash awards to advance their teaching and research. Serbia: IBM signs agreement with Union University's School of Computing
IBM has signed a 5-year agreement with Union University's School of Computing to allow for research and education of faculty and students related to IBM products and technologies. IBM plans to organize courses and faculty training and then begin implementing IBM curricula in the next school year.

China: IBM Master Speech program launched at Peking University
The China University Relations team launched its IBM Master Speech program series on June 13 at Peking University. The program aims to connect IBM distinguished leaders and scientists with students at top Chinese universities to build IBM leading image in academia and the public.

France: ENS Lyon joins the 'Décrypthon' Program
On June 11, AFM (French Muscular Dystrophy Association), CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) and IBM inaugurated the new IBM p550 server being offered to ENS Lyon, one of the most prestigious French Scientific Schools. ENS Lyon will apply its computing and technical skills to the benefit of the 'Décrypthon' Program, which is a collaboration to use grid computing for research in neuromuscular disorders.

France: MIAGE National Days in Orléans
In May, IBM co-sponsored the MIAGE National Days at the University of Orléans, which is part of the MIAGE network. 650 participants, including students, graduates, professors and business partners, met for conferences and round tables on the topic of Job Changes in IT.

Latvia: IBM and Riga Technical University begin cooperative program
IBM and Riga Technical University (RTU) have agreed to work together to develop curricula that will enhance the skills of the RTU students. Two undergraduate courses are planned: Service Oriented Architecture using WebSphere products and Software Engineering using Rational products. IBM will also train the professors, contribute academic software licenses, and provide certification of best students.

Worldwide: IBM Academic Initiative members evaluate new on-line offering
A pilot is underway to evaluate IBM's Virtual Innovation Center (VIC), an on-line education offering that is currently only available to IBM Business Partners. Faculty around the world volunteered to test the VIC as a method for getting courseware, training, and technical documents about IBM technologies.

Awards: 2007 IBM Innovation Awards for faculty
The IBM Innovation Awards program is an international award competition designed to increase the use of open source and open standards-based tools for academic curricula and research. IBM is currently accepting proposals for the Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) Innovation Award and the Real-time Innovation Award. Cash awards are valued between $10,000 and $30,000 USD.

Faculty spotlight: Msc. Patricia de Andrade Bueno Garcia
Professor Andrade draws on her real-world experience as a corporate a DBA, inspiring her students to advance their IBM DB2 skills and help fill a gap in the Brazilian work force. Thanks to her efforts, students at UNIFAE Centro Universitio Franciscano have the opportunity to join a DB2 Student Ambassador program and take her special post-graduate course for IBM DB2 Professional Certification.

Contests: IBM Academic Initiative India launches The Great Mind Challenge 2007
The Academic Initiative team in India launched the Great Mind Challenge and opened its on-line registration. This is a unique opportunity for student programmers to develop innovative solutions using open standards-based IT tools under grueling real time situations.

Contests: Two student contests are underway in China
Now through the end of the year, university students all over China have the opportunity to learn new skills and win great prizes. The 2007 Mainframe Technology National Application Contest is offering an IBM mainframe internship to the winner, and the top prize in the 2007 Power Architecture Design Contest is RMB20,000.
