Part 3: Innovation Challenge

To participate in Part 3 you will need to have completed Parts 1 and 2. If you haven't registered yet, you can register now!

The objective of Part 3 is to have some fun and create a solution that runs on the System i platform. There are two tasks in this section.

Task 1 - Develop a vacation planner

The first task for Part 3 is to develop a vacation planning web site application that runs in the IBM System i environment. Teams must create a web site for planning and booking a complete vacation experience. For example, you might use the site to plan and book the trip to Nintendo for the team.

A minimum of 5 (five) components must be integrated into the planner. Components are items such as:

  • Shopping Cart
  • DB2
  • Map/Directions
  • Weather
  • Vacation Add-ons (shows, restaurants, etc.)
  • eCommerce - purchase with credit cards, etc.
  • Online Video
  • Facebook
  • Email
  • Stock Quote
  • Internet movie DB (IMDB.com)

To encourage innovation, teams are not limited to a specific set of applications. Your team can integrate applications that already exist on the Internet, or you can develop prototype applications of your own, or both. Prototype applications are not required to perform the actual function in all cases. For example, they do not have to actually make a real airline reservation, they can merely simulate it. The judges will be looking for creativity and innovation, as well as integration of the components in the application and with i5/OS. You can check out additional information on our System i HUB.

As your team looks at the list of sample components, consider new and interesting ways these applications could be used together. For example, is there a trip planning site today that also allows you to make a record of what you did on your trip that you can save to show your friends? Would that be something you'd like? If so, how could you integrate that into your application and what components would be useful for that aspect of the planner? What other things can you think of that would make a vacation planning site more interesting and useful?

Task 2 - Document your solution

The second task for Part 3 is to submit a written 2-3 page paper that describes the following aspects of your vacation planner:

  • Technical description of solution -- how does it work?
  • User-oriented description of solution -- what does it do, and what are its attributes?
  • Development environment details and run-time environment details.
  • Other applicable supporting materials about your solution that you wish to include.
Judging

Part 3 submissions will be judged by iSociety members using the following criteria:

  • Clarity and completeness of documentation 1-- 50 points
  • Technical description of solution 1-- 50 points
  • Innovation: 1-- 50 points for each of the following categories:
    • Simplicity
    • Intuitiveness
    • Attractiveness
    • Uniqueness
  • Extra points for the following: 1 -- 25 points for each of the following categories:
    • Integration with i5/OS functionality
    • Security
    • Solution runs in all standard browsers

The two winning teams for Part 3 will be those that received the combined judges' highest point scores. Each student on each of the 2 winning teams for Part 3 will receive a Nintendo Wii. In addition, the students on the 1st place team, as well as their faculty sponsor, if applicable, will also receive a trip to Nintendo in Redmond, WA, to see System i in action.
