2007 Official rules

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED. OPEN TO COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, 18 YEARS OF AGE AND OLDER IN THE FOLLOWING PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES – AUSTRIA, RUSSIA, BELGIUM, CZECH REPUBLIC, DENMARK, FINLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, HUNGARY, ITALY, NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, POLAND, SOUTH AFRICA, S. IRELAND, SLOVAKIA, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND, UK, SPAIN AND PORTUGAL.

Please note that ONLY this version of the contest rules contained here and written in English is the ONLY final, official and legal version. Any other translation of the rules, not on this website, are for information purposes only and are NOT legally enforceable.

  1. Participation
    To participate in the contest, you must first complete the on-line registration form. Students are eligible to participate in teams with a maximum of 4 students on a team, and all students on an individual team must represent the same college or university. Select a team name, and each student must register, indicating the name of their team on the form where indicated. Registration is open from 15 October, 2007 through 30 November, 2007. Follow all instructions and complete the on-line registration form in its entirety. This process does not constitute entry, but rather registration as a potential entrant. The contest is open from 22 October 2007 12:00:00 PM GMT until 31 December, 2007 11:59:59 PM GMT. You must be 18 years of age or older and a college or university student as described in Rule #6. Any team may have a faculty member act as a faculty sponsor, although this is not required. If your team has a faculty sponsor, enter the faculty sponsor name and email address on the registration form where indicated. The faculty sponsor of the 1st place team in Part 3 is eligible to participate in the trip as described in Rule #8.


  2. Part 1: Discover
    Once students have completed the on-line registration form, IBM will confirm each student's registration with an email to the address provided by the student within three business days. IBM will provide an access code and url to each team member within five business days of receipt of their registration. To compete in Part 1 of the contest, a team must take an on-line quiz available at the url provided. Students must follow all instructions and complete the quiz in its entirety. Once the team passes the quiz, they cannot take the quiz again. Teams who do not answer all questions correctly the first time may continue to submit responses until the contest deadline. In addition to successfully completing the quiz, each student on a team must register on iSociety at www.iSociety.org. Under the "Community" column click on the orange "Join" and follow the registration instructions. Each student on the first 150 teams to answer all questions, and register each student on the team for iSociety, will be awarded a t-shirt as described in Rule #8. Once the Contest Sponsor has received quizzes from the first 5 teams with correct answers to all questions, a notice will be posted on the Web site. After that time, and until 31 December 2007, students may still take the quiz and receive a t-shirt while supplies last. Each student on the first five (5) teams to answer the quiz correctly will also be awarded a $25(USD) gift certificate to Amazon.com as described in Rule #8.


  3. Part 2: Explore and Create
    A team must have submitted an entry for Part 1 in order to compete in Part 2. Upon submission of an entry for Part 1, each student on a team will receive a user id and password plus information on how to access Part 2. Teams will follow the stated instructions for the first task in Part 2 by signing on to i5/OS and following all instructions in their entirety. The first task must be completed before proceeding to the second task. The second task in Part 2 involves each team creating a poster according to the following criteria:
    • Must have an opening title which will be used by the judges as a reference
    • Must contain at least one (non-title) reference to any one of the following: IBM System i platform, PHP, Zend, or IBM
    • Meets all video criteria: 1–10 points
    • Creativity: 1–10 points
    • Uniqueness: 1–10 points
    The five winning teams for Part 2 will be those that successfully completed all parts of the first task and received the combined judges' five highest point scores for the second task. Each student on each of the 5 winning teams for Part 2 will receive an Apple iPod Nano as described in Rule #8.


  4. Part 3: Innovation Challenge
    All teams successfully completing Part 2 are eligible to participate in Part 3 and each student will receive a new user ID and password with instructions for accessing Part 3. The first task for Part 3 is to develop a vacation planner to run in the IBM System i environment. Teams must create a web site for booking a complete vacation experience as an example, they might plan and book the trip to Nintendo for the team. A minimum of 5 (five) components must be integrated into the planner. Components are items such as the following, but are not limited to the following. Teams should use their creativity and innovation to develop their own ideas.

    • Map/Directions
    • Weather
    • Vacation Add-ons (shows, restaurants, etc.)
    • eCommerce – purchase with credit cards, etc.
    • Currency converter
    • Weather
    • Online Video
    • Facebook
    • Email
    • Stock Quote
    • Internet movie DB (IMDB.com)
    • DB2
    Each team member will receive a new user id and password required to access an IBM-supplied System i environment for testing their solution.

    The second task for Part 3 is to submit a written 2-3 page paper that describes the following aspects of the solution they developed in the first task:
    • Technical description of solution how does it work?
    • User-oriented description of solution what does it do, and what are its attributes?
    • Development environment details and runtime environment details.
    • Other applicable supporting materials about your solution you wish to include.
    Part 3 submissions will be judged by COMMON Europe members using the following criteria:
    • Clarity and completeness of documentation 1–50 points
    • Technical description of solution 1–50 points
    • Innovation: 1–50 points for each of the following categories
      • Simplicity
      • Intuitiveness
      • Attractiveness
      • Uniqueness
    • Extra points for the following: 1–25 points for each of the following categories
      • Integration with i5/OS functionality
      • Security
      • Solution runs in all standard browsers
    The two winning teams for Part 3 will be those that received the combined judges' highest point scores. Each student on each of the 2 winning teams for Part 3 will receive a Nintendo Wii as described in Rule #8. In addition, the students on the 1st place team, as well as their faculty sponsor, if applicable, will also receive a trip to Nintendo in Redmond, Washington, USA, also as described in Rule #8.

    In the event of a tie, the winners will be the entrants receiving the highest scores for the categories included in innovation. If there is still a tie, the winners will be the entrants receiving the highest scores for technical description.


  5. Judges
    The panel of judges for Part 2 and Part 3 will be comprised of members of the COMMON Europe User Group which includes customers, business partners, academia, and IBM technical experts. Judges' decisions are final in all matters relating to the contest. To avoid conflicts of interest, judges who are employed at colleges/universities will not review or judge entries submitted by students of the college/university at which the judge is employed.


  6. Eligibity
    Contest is open to students who are enrolled full-time or part-time at a two-, three-, or four-year accredited college or university in the following countries – Austria, Russia, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, South Africa, S. Ireland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Spain, Portugal. Proof of academic enrollment may be required. Employees of IBM, judges of IBM System i Innovation Challenge and the immediate family members and household members of each are not eligible to enter the contest.


  7. Submissions
    The contest will be conducted in English and all submissions must be in English.

    All entries may be submitted starting 22 October, 2007 9:00 AM GMT. Entries must be received by the Contest Sponsor no later than 31 December, 2007 11:59:59 PM GMT. Entry for a team for all Parts is deemed submitted by the first entry from any member of a team from an authorized account holder of the e-mail address used as the user name at the time of registration. Authorized account holder is defined as the natural person who is assigned to the e-mail address by an Internet access provider, on-line service provider, or other organization responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address. If your registration form is incomplete, you will not be eligible for the contest. Contest Sponsor assumes no responsibility for computer system, hardware, software, network program, or other errors, failures, or malfunctions of any kind, whether human or technical in nature, in the transmission or receipt of entries or registrations. Part 2 and 3 of the contest will be judged according to criteria in Rules #3 and #4.


  8. Prizes
    Part 1 Prizes: One t-shirt will be awarded to each student on the first one hundred and fifty (150) teams to answer all Part 1 questions, as determined by time stamped entries, as long as each team member has registered on www.iSociety.org. Approximate Retail Value: $15.00 USD, each. One $25 USD gift certificate for Amazon.com will be awarded to each student on the first five (5) teams to answer all Part 1 questions correctly as determined by time stamped entries as long as each team member has registered on www.iSociety.org. Retail Value: $25.00 USD, each. No cash value or substitutions of the prizes except by Contest Sponsor.

    Part 2 Prizes: One 4 GB Apple iPod Nano will be awarded to each student on the first five (5) winning teams, based on the successful completion of all components of the first task plus the judging score on the video in the second task. Approximate Retail Value: $200.00 USD, each.

    Part 3 Prizes: One Nintendo Wii will be awarded to each student on the first and second place teams as determined by the judges' scores. Approximate Retail Value: $300 USD, each. In addition, the students on the 1st place team, as well as the faculty sponsor, if applicable, will also receive a four-day trip to Nintendo in Redmond, Washington, USA, which includes round trip coach airfare from the commercial airport closest to the winner's college or university, to London and then onto Redmond, Washington, ground transportation to/from airports and between hotel and Nintendo, and three nights/6 meals at Hilton Seattle or comparable hotel. Trip must be taken between 1 March and 31 March, 2008, or this portion of the prize will be forfeited; the winning team members must all travel on the same dates. The 1st place team members will each receive a Zend PHP Certification Training course and a Zend PHP Certification Exam Voucher. Retail Value of Zend Training and Certification Exam voucher: $600 USD each; Approximate Retail Value of trip: $1,500 USD, each. (Value of trip prizes may vary with airfare fluctuations and point of origin.)

    No cash value or substitutions of prizes except by Contest Sponsor who may change prizes or models of equipment as availability changes or make such substitutions as necessary to meet export requirements. Prizes will be delivered to confirmed winners. Winners of trips must pay all incidental expenses associated with travel and any expenses not specified and are responsible for proper travel documentation. Taxes on all prizes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the prize winners. By accepting prizes, winners agree to release and hold harmless IBM and its subsidiaries, affiliates and related companies and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents from any and all liability, loss or damage of any kind arising out of or in connection with winners' participation in this Contest, or with respect to awarding, receipt, possession, use and/or misuse of any prize, or participation in the Contest or in prize-related activities. BY ACCEPTING PRIZES, WINNERS EXPRESSLY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE CONTEST PARTIES HAVE NEITHER MADE, NOR ARE IN ANY MANNER RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY WARRANTY, REPRESENTATION OR GUARANTEE, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, IN FACT OR IN LAW, RELATIVE TO PRIZE. Except where prohibited by applicable law, by accepting prize, winners consent to the use of their name, likeness, and biographical information for advertising and promotional purposes worldwide without limitations and without additional compensation.


  9. Notification
    Winners of Part 1 will be notified via email within fifteen business days of the time stamp on the quiz. Part 2 and Part 3 winners will be notified by express mail or via e-mail on or about 15 January, 2008, and will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability/publicity within 7 days of notification (except where prohibited) or prize will be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate winner on the basis of the criteria set forth herein.

    By submitting entries, entrant grants the Contest Sponsor and its agents of this contest the right to publish, use, adapt, sell, edit and/or modify such entry (and electronic communications related to such entry) in any way, in commerce, and in any and all media worldwide, including but not limited to the Internet, without limitation and without compensation to the entrants. Entrant also grants Contest Sponsor a worldwide irrevocable, nonexclusive and royalty free right and license to use, have used, copy, reproduce, transfer, modify and/or display any information contained in their entry in whole or part and in any form without compensation. Entries must be entrant's own original creations, must not infringe on third party rights, must not have won previous awards based on the same or similar entrant's submission to this contest, must not have been posted on another Web site prior to submission and must be suitable for publication. Winners may be required to sign an additional affidavit/license (except where prohibited) to this effect. Taxes on all prizes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the prize winners. Entrants agree to be bound by the official contest rules.


  10. Licensing
    By submitting entries in Part 3, the entrants agree to license their code under any of the OSI approved licenses, all of which are available on www.opensource.org. Further, the entrants agree to post their code on www.sourceforge.org and provide IBM a link to the posted code. Entries must be entrants own original creations, must not infringe on third party rights, must not have won previous awards, must not have been posted on another Web site prior to submission and must be suitable for publication. Entrants must complete and submit the downloadable Certificate of Originality, which must be reviewed and approved, prior to the entry being considered. Winners may be required to sign an additional affidavit/license (except where prohibited) to this effect.


  11. Contest Sponsor
    Contest Sponsor reserves the right to cancel or suspend the contest at Contest Sponsor discretion, including for reasons such as viruses, bugs or other causes beyond Contest Sponsor control corrupting the administration, security, or proper judging of the contest. If Contest Sponsor detects harmful system activity, harmful network activity, or use of the systems for activity beyond the scope of the contest, Contest Sponsor reserves the right to remove system resources or to eliminate a student from the contest. Contest Sponsor and its authorized submission site provider are not responsible for technical failures of any kind, including, but not limited to malfunctions, interruptions, or disconnections in phone lines or network hardware or software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by 31 December, 2007 on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination thereof including any injury or damage to an entrant's or any other person's computer related to or resulting from playing or downloading any material in the promotion. Submission of an entry constitutes your acceptance of the official rules of the contest. Any attempt to deliberately damage any web site or to undermine the legitimate operation of this promotion is a violation of criminal and civil laws, and should such an attempt be made, IBM reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law. Entries are subject to verification and will be declared invalid if they are illegible, mechanically reproduced, mutilated, forged, falsified, altered or tampered with in any way. Entrants agree to abide by the Contest Rules and the decisions of the independent judging panel, which are final. If any entrant attempts to manipulate another data, the entire team will be disqualified immediately.


  12. Winners information
