Students entering the contest will log on to a remote mainframe system
from their own workstations; there is no need to consult a travel agent
to take part in the contest.
The contest is divided into three parts:
|
 |
 |
 |
|
Part 1: Breaking the ice
IBM provides extensive screen shots and direction, guiding students along
and telling them exactly what they need to do to log into the mainframe
system and complete the Part 1 tasks. This part of the contest is designed
to get students comfortable with navigating the mainframe user interface,
as well as introducing them to some basic mainframe concepts. The first
500 students to successfully complete this section will receive custom
Master the Mainframe T-shirts.
This year's Master the Mainframe T-shirt will mimic a concert T-shirt.
Students from the first 50 unique schools to register for the contest will
have their school's hometown listed as a "tour date" on the shirt.
Hello, Cleveland!

Part 2: Practical experience
This section will require considerably more work from contestants. Using
the skills they learned in Part 1, they will perform some more extensive
systems programming and application developing tasks. The first 60 students
to successfully complete this section 100% correctly will receive a $100 pre-paid debit card and a certificate from IBM.
Also, all students to complete Part 2 100% correctly will be eligible to put their resumes in the Student Opportunity System database, a recruiting tool accessible to all of IBM's clients and business partners.

Part 3: Real-world challenge
This section is very challenging and will require extensive work from the
student over weeks and months. The tasks in Part 3 are taken from real-life
situations encountered by experienced systems programmers. The five students
who manage to successfully complete the most Part 3 tasks 100% correctly in sequence will receive a Nintendo Wii system. In addition, the top two winners will receive a two-day expenses-paid trip to the IBM mainframe lab in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Registration begins September 4, 2007. The contest will run from October
1 through December 28, 2007.
