Contest overview

This fall semester, IBM ran the Master the Mainframe Contest for college and university students across the U.S. and Canada (excluding Quebec). This year, high school students were also encouraged to compete!

No experience with mainframes was necessary to compete. In fact, the contest was designed for students with little or no mainframe experience, increasing with difficulty as the contest progressed. Students just needed to bring drive and competitive spirit to be ready to compete.

Why a mainframe contest?

Today's mainframes are growing in popularity and require a new generation of mainframe experts. This contest is designed to familiarize students with the basic skills and concepts that will make them more competitive for high-paying jobs and internships in the enterprise computing industry.

Did you know that 25 of the top 25 banks worldwide run on System z, IBM's mainframe computing system? 71% of Fortune 500 companies are also System z clients. See this page for more reasons to learn about mainframes.

This short video offers job-hunting perspectives from several students who have recently taken mainframe education on campus.

Also, the contest is fun! Click here to see a photo montage of last year's contestants on YouTube.

To compete, students must have an educator at their institution enrolled in the IBM Academic Initiative.
