Open Encounters of z Virtual Kind skills challenge is a series of games in the online virtual world called Second Life. These games offer a
great opportunity to increase your awareness and knowledge of IBM and open source technologies...
and have fun at the same time.
As you travel about in Second Life (called being "in world"), you will solve puzzles,
traverse mazes, swing over fire pits, and perform other various virtual feats, while you learn about the
IBM System z mainframe, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), the Cell/B.E. processor, Grid computing, Linux,
Java, and a host of other technologies. |

|
You need two things before you can play the Open Encounters games:
 |
 |
A universal IBM ID and password
You might already have one. If not, you can easily register and get one. It's handy to have; you can use it to
access downloads, tutorials, webcasts, and similar resources at other IBM web sites.
|
 |
Access to Second Life and your own avatar
Second Life is a Web application that runs on your computer and requires Internet access. You need to download
the Second Life application and follow the instructions to establish a Second Life name and password,
and create your own avatar. |
After completing these steps and getting comfortable navigating your avatar "in world", you will
be ready to start the skills challenge. Get the details on How to play.
|
|
|
Use the Open Encounters self-scoring sheet to keep up with your progress.
The games vary in difficulty. You get one (1) point for completing a basic-level game and two (2) points
for an advanced-level game.
If you attempt the advanced challenges, we’ll reward you with a virtual prize! |
