Summer Faculty Seminars

This summer, the IBM Academic Initiative System z program is pleased to offer, once again, two free back-to-back faculty seminars. These seminars are available to members of the Academic Initiative program who have demonstrated an interest in large systems thinking (either by teaching or preparing to teach courses related to mainframe technologies).

Total duration: Two weeks

Location: Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The first one-week seminar presents the topics contained in the popular Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics course.


Where: Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
When: June 16 - 20, 2008
Prerequisites: None.
Topics addressed: Introduction to the Mainframe, Introduction to z/OS, System z Hardware / Architecture, Parallel Sysplex Clustering, TSO / ISPF / USS, Job Control Language (JCL), Batch and JES2 / JES3, Workload Manger (WLM), Transaction Management, Database Management, Networking (Communications Server), Security, WebSphere Messaging and Queuing, HTTP Server and WebSphere Application Server.

The second one-week seminar focuses on special enterprise computing topics, including virtualization using z/VM and Rational Developer for System z.


Where: Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
When: June 23 - 27, 2008
Prerequisites: None
Instructors: Subject matter experts from IBM labs nationwide will run the education during this week.
Topics addressed: Presentations and labs introducing virtualization using z/VM and connecting students to the mainframe world using Rational Developer for System z (www.ibm.com/software/awdtools/rdz/about/index.html). Time will also be devoted during this week to allow professors to present and discuss the enterprise computing programs at their own schools.

Online System z Education available at Marist College

Marist College is pleased to announce the availability of their Enterprise Systems certificate program. This 100% online, three-tiered certificate program contains a series of online training modules that will help students increase their knowledge of the System z platform through experienced-based learning. The program is available through the Marist IDCP (Institute of Data Center Professionals).

Faculty education: Introduction to the Mainframe: z/OS Basics

In this workshop, you learn about these popular z/OS topics:

  • z/OS Navigation - TN3270, Telnet and FTP, TSO, ISPF, SDSF, reading and understanding system messages in the SYSLOG, system tasks (Started, Job, TSO), Data Sets, VTOCs and disk storage, Master Catalog and User Catalogs, JCL, Batch processing & aystem utilities, Unix System Services File Systems (HFS and zFS)
  • z/OS Operation - MVS commands, JES commands, subsystem commands, using SDSF console facility, using FTP to interface with z/OS facilities
  • z/OS Documentation - Location and navigation of IBM z/OS technical manual URLs and IBM z/OS information URLs
  • z/OS Configuration, Components and Security - System parameters and initialization overview, system components overview, creating userids, securing system resources
  • z/OS WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere MQSeries, DB2, CICS and IMS - Starting and stopping each subsystem, reviewing subsystem activity log, identifying subsystem messages and codes, WAS administration console overview, MQSeries administration facilities overview, DB2 administration facilities overview, CICS administration facilities overview, IMS administration facilities overview
