Getting Started Learn Teach Connect

Over the years, IBM has embraced many open source technologies. As a result, IBM is now the leading supporter of many core technologies created through collaboration with universities, educational labs and open industry standards groups. Today, due to the input of a global network of diverse contributors, the open source movement is sparking unprecedented advances in innovation.

New to open source?

The IBM Open Source Portal is IBM's first Web site solely devoted to Open Source. Find information on IBM Open Source Initiatives, Open Source innovation, Open Source relevance to the IT industry, Open Source and Open standards, and links and articles on Open Source.

New to open source guide on developerWorks is a great place to start. It puts all the basics of open source in context to help you get started in the most wide-ranging, growing, and dynamic field of software development today. Answers questions such as "What is open source technology?" and "Why is open source technology important?" Also includes related downloads and CDs and learning resources.


Open source technologies

Many open source technologies can be seamlessly integrated into computer science, engineering, information systems and other IT curricula. Examples of open source offerings are:

Linux™. Stable, secure, scalable and powerful, the Linux operating system is one of the cornerstones of an on demand operating environment.
Linux on POWER for the Academic Community explains how Linux, running on flexible IBM high-performance systems, can meet the computing-intensive needs of academic research.

Eclipse. A flexible, open development environment for integration, Eclipse provides developers with a robust and full-featured industry platform for the development of highly integrated tools.

Cloudscape™. Released to the open source community as Apache Derby, Cloudscape is a Java relational database management system that can be embedded in Java programs and used for online transaction processing.

WebSphere® Application Server Community Edition. WebSphere Application Sever Community Edition is a Java-certified, production-grade platform built on the Apache Geronimo application server. DB2® Express-C 9 is a free version of DB2 Express Edition for the community. DB2 Express-C 9 offers the same core data server features as DB2 Express 9 and provides a solid base to build and deploy applications developed using C/C++, Java™ platform, .NET®, PHP, Ruby on Rails, and other programming languages.
