RexxLA announced its first open source release of Object REXX
IBM Object REXX is now available through the Open Source community. The product, known as "ooRexx" is available from RexxLA (http://www.rexxla.org) under the Common Public License (CPL) V1.0. Download the first release of ooRexx 3.0.0 from:

Play to Learn: DB2 Detective & Cloudscape Detective Games
Become familiar with relational database concepts through an interactive game. Available through IBM developerWorks, the game assumes no prior database knowledge or SQL programming experience. Students, teachers/professors, or anyone wanting to gain an understanding of data management can learn the necessary concepts for working with DB2 Universal Database or IBM Cloudscape. Program starter kit in Portuguese for Brazilian members
IBM Academic initiatve has now added a detailed information kit in portuguesse for Brazilian and portuguesse members describing program benefits and giving instruction on how to become member and access these benefits.

IBM launches a redesigned IBM ACE web site
IBM is pleased to announce a significantly improved IBM Advanced Career Education (ACE) web experience. With input from the clients, the IBM ACE web site was enhanced with new information specifically for the Academic Institutions. A new "Information for Schools" tab has been created which provides Academic Institutions with all the information they need to understand the IBM ACE program. The site also includes detailed information on the program, materials and pricing.

Announcing Linux on POWER Open Source Developer Contest
IBM is excited to announce that the Linux on POWER Open Source Developer Contest had such a great response last year that it is going international. The Open Source Developer Competition is designed to reward and showcase innovative new open source applications that are designed specifically for Linux running on the PPC architecture, or award the porting of existing applications from predetermined lists. You can enter the Tier 1 challenge for the Segway Human Transporter along with Tier 2 or 3, or select a single Tier to participate in and win.

1st Tier Prize:   5  - Segway Human Transporter
2nd Tier Prize:  50  - Apple Mac G5's
3rd Tier Prize:  50  - $1,000 cash prizes
Entries are due by July 15, 2005.

Shanghai JiaoTong University Wins ACM ICPC
Students from host school Shanghai Jiaotong University in Shanghai, China, took first place in the Association for Computing Machinery's (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), sponsored by IBM. The international "battle of the brains," in Shanghai, China, challenged students to tackle a semester's worth of computer programming curriculum under a grueling five-hour deadline, in a battle of logic, strategy, and mental endurance. Call for participation - 2nd IEEE conference on Autonomic computing
Sponsored by IEEE, the 2nd International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC-05) will bring together researchers from different fields of research who are addressing aspects of self-management in computing systems. To deal with the increasing complexity of large- scale computer and software systems, they must manage themselves, in accordance with high-level guidance from humans — a vision that has been referred to as autonomic computing. Event is being held in Seattle, WA, USA from June 13-16, 2005.

Enrollment now open for iSeries Academic Initiative Roundtable
Join us in Rochester, MN for our annual Roundtable and/or Summer School which is offered free to faculty. Roundtable is an opportunity to collaborate with and learn from other faculty members, and our theme this year is Building and Marketing Integrated Industry Relevant e-Business programs. With the decline in IT and computer science enrollment across the board in colleges and universities, we are seeing many unique offerings in post-secondary education. Our Roundtable will provide the opportunity to learn and network. Summer School is our annual one week event which offers faculty members in depth, hands-on iSeries education from the IBM experts in Rochester.

IBM Grid Computing: Creating Value for Higher Education
Join us for a presentation on IBM Grid Computing May 4 11:00 - 12:15 ET. This presentation covers three major topics. It includes a brief discussion of what is grid computing, the value of grids, problems addressed by grids, the deployment options for grids, and uses of grids in higher education and research. The second topic is a presentation of grid implementations in higher education with IBM participation. The last topic covers IBM collaboration in developing grid standards and open source implementations.

New DB2 course material available
DB2 Universal Database Advanced Administration Workshop (CF45) teaches how to perform advanced database administration tasks using DB2 Universal Database. These tasks include client administration, automatic maintenance features, problem determination, advanced load usage, parallelism & SMP exploitation, DB2 Governor, audit facility, distributed data management, remote administration, multidimensional data clustering, online reorganizations, use of the Health Center, and federated database support.
