This August issue is one of our biggest ever with news that spans the globe. There is plenty to read, such as our faculty spotlight from a high school in Alaska, a summer internship program and education centers in China, an IBM Open Standards Lab in Mexico, and mainframe training in Russia. And there is also plenty to do. China: Summer internship program is underway
IBM China launched its summer internship program in May of 2007. The program offers 500 intern positions and more than 23,000 students from hundreds of Chinese universities have submitted their applications.

China: Three IBM System i Education Centers launched
IBM announced three new System i Education Centers that will work with IBM partner universities in China. These centers, located in Tianjing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, will develop programs to promote and teach System i technology in the universities.

Europe: Internships available for central and eastern European students

Germany: Real recruitment in the virtual world
IBM Germany now offers a recruitment center in Second Life. Students have the opportunity to look for job offers, to hand in their resumes, and to speak directly to executives from time to time. Check the Web site for exact dates.

Germany: zUniversity community on xing.com
zSeries has established a German zUniversity group on xing.com for students who have taken part in zUniversity events. Group members can ask questions, exchange ideas and stay in contact with the IBM company. The site will also offer internships and thesis projects.

Mexico: New IBM Open Standards Lab (JavaLab) opens
The Instituto Politecnico Nacional, one of the top public universities in Mexico, with over 5,000 IT students, has just opened a new IBM Open Standards Lab (JavaLab). The lab will be 100% dedicated to the IBM middleware portfolio and the Professional Qualification Program deployment.

Russia: Moscow State University of Economics and Statistics is offering mainframe training
Moscow State University of Economics and Statistics, in collaboration with IBM Business Partner EC Leasing, has opened a new IBM Mainframe Department. Students are now learning IBM hardware, operating systems and software as a part of two-year education process to increase their mainframe and System z skills.

Worldwide: Join the IBM DB2 Viper 2 Open Beta testing program
IBM has announced an Open Beta for testing the enhanced version of the DB2 9 "Viper" data server. The upgrade, code-named Viper 2, will build upon the success of DB2 9 by further enhancing the product's industry-leading security and workload management features. Worldwide: Academia, IT Industry leaders create new principles for sharing collaborative research
The University-Industry Innovation Summit team announced the Free Participant Use Principles to address collaborative research. This second set of guiding principles provide a framework useful in situations where the collaborators intend for the results to be available to each other without fee, and available to others on either a free or reasonable fee basis.

Award: Deadline approaching for IBM Innovation Awards
The IBM Innovation Awards program is an international award competition designed to increase the use of open source and open standards-based tools for academic curricula and research. IBM is currently accepting proposals for the Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) Innovation Award and the Real-time Innovation Award. Cash awards are valued between $10,000 and $30,000 USD. Deadline to initiate a proposal is August 24.

Tutorial: Scripting Second Life with Rational Application Developer
The virtual world of Second Life is special; it is made up of content created and owned by users. Not only can you create lush 3-D objects (and sell them for the equivalent of real money!), but you can also create both simple and complex scripts to control their behavior and appearance. Tutorial: Introduction to Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations
The need to transform XML is so common that Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) is considered one of the basic XML specifications. This tutorial explains how to create XSLT stylesheets.
