Building skills in a globally integrated marketplace

Portrait of Jim Corgel

The 21st century workplace is very different from the workplace of a decade ago. To say that globalization has changed everything is not an exaggeration—it's a reality. Businesses have to adapt to this changing environment or risk losing to their competitors.

The challenges of globalization are keeping companies on their toes. Enterprises in a global market need to be able to collaborate across time zones and cultures, and they must develop the skills needed to do this effectively. Today's employees change jobs five to ten times within their lifetime. This means companies have to deal with subject matter experts continually shifting or leaving. These complex business issues are driving the need for employees that have a brand new mix of skills.

What is the bottom line? To remain competitive in a global marketplace, skills are more important than ever. Innovation and ideas will count more than products or prices. The market demand for skilled IT workers will continue to grow.

We have a number of resources within IBM to help you and your teams build the skills you need:

IBM Virtual Innovation Center
Connect to a rich array of sales and technical education, including online courseware, virtual labs, skills roadmaps, and self-testing.
IBM Innovation Centers for Business Partners
Attend workshops and briefings in a traditional classroom setting or work directly with an expert to build technical, sales and marketing skills.
IBM developerWorks
Join this community of 6 million users and take advantage of tutorials, training, technical events, briefings and webcasts. Collaborate with other companies and developers around high-growth areas such as SOA, SaaS or open source. Exchange knowledge, best practices and even write code.
IBM Academic Initiative
We work with universities to help shape curriculum and address current skills gaps and build a pipeline of skilled IT workers. Get involved and join a roundtable at a college or university to talk about the skills needed within your enterprise.

If a company is able to adapt to the global marketplace, the benefits are many. Enterprises that have learned the art of global collaboration can see faster development and lower costs, access to highly-skilled teams around the world, and the ability to split up projects among teams with specific skills, regardless of location. They'll unlock a world of opportunity.

Becoming a globally integrated enterprise doesn't happen overnight; building skills is the first step.

Sincerely,
