Jewelry Sales to Shine in 2013
Date added: 2013-04-09
Jewelry sales are expected to grow more than 11 percent in the second quarter and nine percent overall this year, according to a new Big Data-based retail forecast from IBM. Improved consumer confidence, lower unemployment and enhanced stock dividends from the fourth quarter of 2012 have people ready to spend on luxury items like jewelry again. The forecast applies patented IBM algorithms to some 22 years of historical retail data. As a result, it's over 97 percent accurate -- four times as accurate as retailers’ own forecasts. UCLA Relies on Breakthrough ‘Big Data’ Technology from IBM To Help Patients with Traumatic Brain Injuries
Date added: 2013-03-26
IBM, Excel Medical and UCLA tackle big data in efforts to uncover preventative treatments for patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Dr. Xiao Hu, associate professor at the UCLA Department of Neurosurgery, analyzes brain wave data to predict the rise of deadly brain pressure as part of a National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke study, Tuesday, March 26, 2013 in Los Angeles, Calif.. Knowing in advance that brain pressure could potentially rise in TBI patients gives doctors more time to prevent further brain damage or death. The Centers for Disease Control estimates 1.7 million people in the United States sustain TBIs every year. (Greg Harbaugh/Feature Photo Service)
