DB2 9.5 further extends the value clients have experienced in the first year of DB2 Viper. The deep compression capability in DB2 Viper offered a unique capability for clients to drive down the costs associated with an ever growing quantity of data. Beyond the concrete storage cost savings deep compression offered, it also simplified administration of large databases and lead to welcome performance gains for many clients. Reflex response Today's environments require the data server to be able to react immediately to ensure availability, optimal performance and lower cost. Innovation in this area has long been a focus for DB2. This latest release continues this trend with additional capabilities in the areas of install, manage, and maintain combine to give DB2 the ability to respond as if by reflex to take the right action at the right time to make the best use of system and personnel resources without sacrificing any of the robustness of DB2. Examples include the ability to automatically start compressing data once there's enough data to create a meaningful dictionary and full integration of Tivoli System Automation easily automate the failover process. These benefits are a direct extension of our work with key ISVs like SAP to make DB2 a hands free component of the business solution. Confident compliance The ability to keep ahead of the ever changing threats and government or internal regulations to ensure fully protection of information assets is a growing concern. DB2 9.5 offers a number of new or enhanced capabilities designed to make clients confident of their ability to meet these objectives. This includes a number of changes to the audit facility of DB2 to both simplify the administration of enabling audits, provide greater flexibility in delivering the right level of information required for auditing, and delivering a new set of tooling for both administrators and auditors to facilitate the audit process and better integrate DB2 into an enterprise-wide audit strategy. The new capabilities are not limited to keeping track of what happens, but also ensuring that only the desired access happens. To this end we’ve expanded the depth of the role based security model, enabled trusted context in three-tier environments like WebSphere to be easily and efficiently propagated to the data server to provide more control on when privileges are available to users. The ability to use advanced encryption throughout the data lifecycle further minimizes the potential for unintended access to sensitive data. Transactional XML Many DB2 customers have leveraged the unique XML capabilities provided by this hybrid data server to transform their use of XML from a convenient way of representing data to a true business asset. DB2 9.5 extends the extremely efficient management & querying capabilities of pureXML with the performance and efficiency required to leverage XML in a large scale transaction environment. To accomplish this, we first streamlined the management of small XML documents to minimize I/O and conserve storage space. In fact, pureXML can store these XML documents in about half the space required for restoring them in flat files or LOBs. The result is additional performance gains as much as 2x for a general transaction processing workload and as much as 5x for bulk inserts with shema validation. DB2 9.5 is also the FIRST major database to support the XQuery update standard. With this comes the ability for sub-document updates that can signifcantly improve performance when changing only a piece of the XML document. Dynamic Warehousing InfoSphere Warehouse is a complete, multipurpose environment that allows you to access, analyze and act on real-time historical and operational information so you can get the insight and agility that you and your people need to consistently generate new opportunities, contain costs and satisfy customers. |
