Role
The application developer is a traditional mainframe developer who uses WebSphere Developer for zSeries V6 with mainframe artifacts for the development, debugging, job submission, and job monitoring of programs destined for use in a z/OS environment.

The application developer may use IBM WebSphere Developer for zSeries V6 to develop COBOL or PL/I applications, and may also integrate existing applications into a service-oriented architecture (SOA).

Assumptions
It is assumed that the individual following this roadmap has basic skills in the following areas:

  • Experience working with z/OS, OS/390, or MVS systems
  • An understanding of 4GLs like COBOL or PL/I
  • An understanding of job control language (JCL)
  • A basic knowledge of Customer Information Control System (CICS)

Objectives
After completing this training, students should be able to:

  • Describe the features provided in IBM WebSphere Developer for zSeries V6 for enterprise development
  • Describe the workstation and host components of WebSphere Developer for zSeries V6
  • Use the Remote System Explorer (RSE) to remotely view and build code
  • Describe the features provided in IBM WebSphere Developer for zSeries for enterprise COBOL and PL/I development
  • Describe how traditional mainframe applications can be used in a service-oriented architecture (SOA)
  • Develop and build COBOL applications in the environment provided by WebSphere Developer for zSeries V6
  • Describe the WebSphere Developer for zSeries Common Access Repository Manager (CARMA) interface
  • Describe how to build, test, and debug z/OS-based DB2 stored procedures
