Role
The system programmer is responsible for performing all installation and tuning processes and procedures as well as ensuring that all CICS services and infrastructures meet operational targets. The system programmer is expected to perform the installation, configuration and day-to-day tasks associated with ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the CICS Transaction Server runtime environment. In addition, the system programmer should understand the complexities of infrastructure design and maintenance, be able to analyze architecture and security issues, and perform advanced troubleshooting. A system programmer is expected to be able to identify performance bottlenecks and provide administrative solutions where appropriate. The system programmer should be self-sufficient and able to perform the majority of the tasks involved in his or her role without assistance.

Assumptions
It is assumed that the individual following this roadmap has basic skills in the following areas:

  • Working knowledge of the underlying operating system platform
  • Working knowledge of z/OS Job Control Language (JCL)
  • Working knowledge of System z communications and Systems Network Architecture (SNA) concepts
  • Familiarity with Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM) concepts and Access Method Services
  • Ability to interpret and utilize assembler output listings.
