Role
The Application Developer is expected to use XML to represent in a platform-independent way when developing and integrating systems. The Application Developer may also be required to use the Java language to programmatically create, parse and manipulate XML documents.
Assumptions
It is assumed that the individual following this roadmap has basic skills in the following areas:
- Working knowledge of underlying operating system platforms
- Understanding of basic Internet concepts
Objectives
After completing this training, students should be able to:
- Describe the common uses of XML in the enterprise
- Enumerate the rules of a well-formed XML document
- Describe the use of a document type definition (DTD) and XML schemas with XML documents
- Create DTDs and XML schemas describing the validation rules for specific XML instances
- Declare and use XML namespaces in an XML document
- Create XPath expressions that locate specific information in an XML instance
- Describe the use of XSL in the processing of XML documents
- Create an XSL transform and use it to transform an XML document into some other kind of document
- Describe XQuery and its use and syntax, with some examples
- Use an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) such as Rational Application Developer to write XML documents, DTDs, XML schemas, and XPath expressions
- Use an XSLT debugger to run and debug XSL transforms
- Describe the underlying architecture of using XML to represent data when developing and integrating applications
- Describe the role of parsers in XML-based applications
- Develop Java-based applications which create, parse and manipulate XML documents
