Course description: CICS V3.2 Advanced Application Development for SOA and Web Services (Remote)

This 5-day instructor-led advanced-level course teaches students how to design, code, and debug CICS application programs that utilize the CICS Web Support and CICS Web Services features in CICS TS V3.2.

The content of this course applies to the entire family of CICS products, and is primarily directed toward application developers who are interested in implementing CICS Web Services. Through a combination of instructor-led lectures and extensive hands-on exercises in COBOL, students learn about the aspects of CICS Web Support that form the foundation for creating and debugging CICS Web Services. The course covers topics such as creating and implementing CICS applications as Web services, developing CICS server and client applications, and implanting security measures in CICS for Web support and Web services applications.

Students who are only interested in learning CICS Web Support in order to implement server- or client-side CICS Web applications may prefer to enroll in other courses, such as CICS Web Support Programming Workshop (CI820) and CICS TS Version 3.1 - Exploiting the New Features (CI825).

Before taking this course, students should have:

• Working knowledge of the underlying operating system platforms
• Basic knowledge of CICS (as taught in course CICS V3.2 Fundamentals (WM800) or (VM800))
• Basic knowledge of application design and programming
• COBOL or PL/1 application development and coding skills (as taught in course CICS V3.2 Command Level Coding (WM860) or (VM860))

After completing this course, students should be able to:

• Describe the support options available for CICS Web Support
• Describe how CICS applications can communicate by using the Request and Response processing capability of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) V1.1
• Configure CICS for Web support
• Utilize enhanced CICS Web Support features for the HTTP V1.1 specification, including chunked transfer-coding, pipelining, and persistent connections
• Use Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and JavaScript to develop a CICS HTTP server and client applications
• Create outbound requests from CICS applications by using CICS as an HTTP client
• Describe the issues associated with CICS state management when a Web browser is used to access CICS
• Describe support options available for CICS Web Services
• Describe Extensible Markup Language (XML), SOAP, and Web Services Description Language (WSDL) support in CICS
• Use CICS-supplied message handlers to process SOAP messages
• Develop and implement CICS applications as Web services
• Use the CICS Web Services assistant to expose existing CICS applications as Web services
• Enable CICS applications to use Web services from external providers
• Build Web services provider or requester applications in CICS
• Use Rational Developer for System z to create a converter program and a WSBind file for use with CICS Web Services provider applications
• Use Rational Developer for System z to consume WSDL files, test CICS Web Services provider applications, and create CICS Web Services requester applications
• Incorporate the appropriate security mechanisms in CICS for Web support and Web services applications
• Describe the CICS Service Flow Modeler feature and its function within an SOA
