NOTE: THIS IS AN ONLINE SELF-PACED VIRTUAL COURSE. DO NOT MAKE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS FOR THIS COURSE.

Self-paced virtual classroom (SPVC) courses provide the same deep technical content as WebSphere Education classroom courses, but allow you to learn on your own schedule. You can stop and start a self-paced virtual class as needed during the 4-day access period.

There is no live instructor for this course, so it may not be appropriate for students who require the guidance of a live instructor.

Course overview:

This self-paced course combines streaming lecture with a hands-on lab exercise to introduce participants to the transfer of files via the DataPower application from one system to another.

The course lecture explains options for transferring files from one system to another using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and SFTP (SSH (Secure Shell) File Transfer Protocol). Students explore the most popular options for securing file transfers, and the benefits and drawbacks of each option. The lecture also describes how to use the DataPower appliance with FTP, Secure FTP, and SFTP, and how to configure the appliance over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol handlers. Finally, students learn how to use the URL-Open extension function to programmatically use the FTP protocol.

The course concludes with a hands-on exercise that shows how to transfer files from one system to another using the DataPower appliance. Students create DataPower configurations satisfying three use cases.

In the first use case, DataPower is configured as an FTP client retrieving a file from the client system. DataPower passes the file to a back-end web service, and then the web service response is placed on an FTP server. This use case incorporates a custom style sheet using the URL-Open command for both an FTP get and an FTP put.

In the second use case, the DataPower appliance acts as an FTP server, accepting an FTP client connection. DataPower is configured in transparent mode, proxying a back-end connection to the actual FTP server.

In the final use case, an SFTP client connects to the DataPower appliance. DataPower is configured as an SFTP server, and on the back-end connection, DataPower proxies an FTP server. This use case teaches students how to integrate SFTP security with an existing FTP environment.
