This workshop presents an overview and detail of Linux performance considerations, monitoring options and tuning parameters available with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0, Novell SUSE Enterprise Linux 20 and other Linux distributions based on the way the Linux operating system manages system resources. A number of important performance metrics that are needed to quantify system performance are also introduced. This presentation then covers the various utilities available in Linux to measure and analyze systems performance. Finally, the presentation explores the various performance parameters and tweaks available within the Linux operating system. Each student team will have access to a Linux system running either Novell SUSE Enterprise Linux 10 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0 throughout the workshop to work with what they have learned during the presentation. The information provided during the class applies to enterprise Linux distributions running on all IBM System platforms.
Skills taught
The objective of this class is to introduce you to the Linux operating system and the performance monitoring tools that are available to the Linux system administrator. In additional, tuning strategy, commands, and parameters are covered. Hands-on exercises are interspersed through the presentation to reinforce what the student has learned during the presentation. After the workshop, you will have a solid understanding of the way the Linux kernel handles system resources, how performance on the Linux operating system can be measured and how a Linux system can be tuned to run applications faster and more efficiently. It is important to understand the workshop addresses Linux performance tuning strategies on all IBM server platforms: System i, System p, System x and System z.
