Course outline

Day 1: Overview and z/VM basics

  • Overview:
  • Hardware types that Linux for z runs on
  • The basics of the Linux operating system on System z
  • Touch on applications and database management systems that run on Linux for System z
  • z/VM basics with hands on labs demonstrating some of the following:
  • CP and CMS Commands and Fundamentals
  • XEDIT Fundamentals
  • REXX Basics
  • This being a beginner class, we thought of covering REXX syntax structure, basic built-in functions and some examples
  • PIPELINES Basics
  • (same as above)

Day 2: Linux basics - a System z Perspective with hands on labs that include:

  • Installing Linux guests ? (to give an overview on how install happens and install methods like VNC, SSH, etc ... we are not considering Linux install in a LPAR mode, only z/VM guest mode)
  • Log in to a Linux system and set a user password
  • Use Linux on-line documentation
  • Manage Linux files and directories
  • Describe the purpose of the shell
  • Use the vi editor
  • Execute common Linux commands
  • Manage Linux processes

Days 3 and 4: Installing, Configuring and Servicing z/VM for Linux Guests

  • This should include discussion and labs that demonstrate:
  • Using the z/VM system editor
  • Plan the initial installation of your z/VM system
  • Modify the system configuration files
  • Generate new entries in the system directory
  • Configure the IOCP/ HCD / HCM definitions
  • An explanation of why we use IOCP and how HCP/HCM helps us to configure IOCP
  • IPL and manage the z/VM system
  • Configure the TCP/IP service machines
  • Discuss system management commands
  • Presume an explanation of systems management at a high level, few basic commands, and not more than that
  • Construct Saved Systems and Saved Segments
  • Only explanation of what Segment Management, but not going over the commands
  • Apply Service Processes to the z/VM system
  • RSU and Corrective Service
  • Execute the VM Service Commands for regeneration of the system
  • We will explain the steps involving PARM disks, especially if CP service is involved; and we think, anything more is deeper than "intro" (i.e. like the VMSES process)

Day 5: Linux Implementation for System z (potentially may be too high level for beginner class - could expand days 3 and 4 to this day as well and drop implementations)

  • Configure and recompile the Linux kernel
  • Back up the system
