By the end of this training you'll have a better understanding of how Information Server and Foundation Tools improve the ability to view data lineage, enable data governance, increase collaboration between modelers, architects, data quality professionals, ETL developers, and business executives, and improve confidence and trust in the data.
In a case-study approach, this course will let you 'drive' Information Server and Foundation Tools in a simulation in which you will use IBM products to solve a business problem (All within your browser)
The course begins by discussing some metadata concepts. It discusses some key issues that organizations view as important. It talks about how a lack of understanding and confidence in information impacts the organization. We'll briefly look at InfoSphere Foundation Tools and Information Server from a product perspective and see how they can help organizations solve many business problems. We'll look at some components including Business Glossary, InfoSphere Data Architect, InfoSphere Discovery, Information Analyzer, FastTrack, and Metadata Workbench.
Then you will be introduced to a case study scenario, and within a Guided Tour Product Simulation, you will look at an actual implementation of Foundation Tools and InfoSphere Information Server. As an executive for JKLW Corporation, you will begin this simulation by opening up a Business Intelligence report. This BI report will be in Cognos for this scenario, but could be any number of other popular BI tools. You will find some critical data on the report that you don't understand or trust. You do know, however, that it greatly affects an important decision that the OC faces. You will then assume another role in the case study:
As a technical liaison to that executive, you will work with Foundation Tools to restore the trust and confidence needed by the executive by tracking that data down to its source and identify how it was derived. Normally, this requires, emails, phone calls, permissions, spreadsheets, frustration, and even then, may take "from 2 days to never" rendering data governance nearly impossible.
However, with Information Server and Foundation Tools you will bring up the Business Glossary browser application where we will see greater detail about the data. Then you will view the business lineage of the data. Using the Metadata Workbench, you will track down data and manage its details and ultimately solve the mystery of how the data (that the executive needed) was calculated and where, when, and by whom this occurred.
