Note: This is a self-paced online course in which the Guided Tour Product Simulation requires no installations: Everything is through your IE 5.0+ browser. Please DO NOT make travel arrangements for this course. After you receive confirmation that you are registered, just follow the instructions to access the course.

This browser-based product simulation let's you "learn-by-doing" in a case-study scenario in which you solve a 'real-life' business problem - no installations needed just a browser and a passion to learn.

By the end of this training you'll have a better understanding of this InfoSphere product's terminology, an overview of its architecture, and a better understanding of how it can be implemented.

Note: This is a self-paced online course. This course usually requires 3 hours to complete. Please do not make travel arrangements for this course. After you receive confirmation that you are enrolled, you will be sent further instructions to access the course materials. Access to individual courses is typically 30 days.

This course starts by talking about the problems that organizations face with data. Then we'll see how companies have tried to solve these problems. We'll then discuss the challenges of integrating master data and customer master data in particular into a centralized location where it will then be considered the 'golden version' of the truth. We'll then talk about how MDM solves these problems. We'll briefly visit MDM's history, where this product fits in the enterprise and how it plays with other software stacks.

Next we'll talk about MDM's architecture in depth so that you will understand how and where it can be extended. We will talk about techniques that you can use to customize and extend MDM's behavior giving it the business value that its competitors do not have. To understand that architecture we will lightly cover object oriented thinking and J2EE libraries.

We will look at a couple of examples of the extension points and go over a 'day in the life of a transaction' within MDM from a User Interface perspective. We will also look at how MDM is presented with information (in terms of XML requests and responses) from the backend server perspective.

We will talk about the depth and breadth of features within MDM and will cover the multi-form capabilities, you will be exposed to the multiple software interactions that can be designed to occur with other products (Both IBM and non-IBM)

After you have gained a high-level understanding of the business problems that MDM solves and a technical understanding of its architecture, you will enter a "Guided Tour Product Simulation" in which you will take data from the source, turn it into XML, have MDM consume it via a service, and then see the results from a User Interface perspective. In this way, you will get a 'round-trip' all the way through.

The tutorial will then discuss troubleshooting, tips, tricks, and avenues for further learning about MDM.

Målgrupp

  • Database Administrators (DBAs)
  • Java Engineers
  • Business Analysts Identifying requirements for the UI
  • Systems Analysts
  • Enterprise Architects
  • Solution Architects
  • Project Managers
  • People Acquiring Data From Source Systems - Legacy Programmers and System Engineers Proficient in COBOL, ETL Developers
  • Middle Tier ETL Developers taking supplied information and formatting it into XML to be consumed by MDM
  • Within MDM, SOA-familiar Designers and Developers, familiar with actual services and Java/J2EE that works within the application server and its container (WAS or WebLogic)
  • Data Integration Teams. The Data Integration Team is involved in what is known as the "Train Ride". The Train Ride includes the following people:
    • All the people who acquire data (Legacy Programmers and System Engineers)
    • All the people who transform the data (ETL folks)
    • All the people who can load the data into MDM, extract it, and participate in the larger enterprise service bus architecture (Architects)

Förkunskaper

You should have:

  • A data processing background
  • Some knowledge of Unix is helpful (The MDM backend server can be and typically is deployed to a Unix platform)
  • Familiarity with databases and schemas (Be able to answer "What is a table and how do tables relate to each other?")
  • A structural knowledge of XML is fundamental but you will learn what is necessary for MDM to be effective
  • Navigation of Windows (MDM clients are largely Windows-based)
  • Object Orientation is not needed for this training but will be needed as you begin to design customizations of MDM's extension points
  • A continuing focus on the business problem that you are attempting to solve

Mål

After you have completed this tutorial and Part II of the Guided Tour Product Simulation, you can then, in your own system and environment, emulate and duplicate the steps that we take to experience the initial success of populating MDM with Party information.

  • Understand the challenges facing organizations and be able to discuss the various styles of master data management.
  • Become familiar with MDM's architecture, be able to identify the extension points in MDM, and understand the phases of an implementation
  • Site the steps to building your own transaction and create an XML document
  • Execute a Service and view the Response
  • Validate the persistence in the Database
  • Locate log files for troubleshooting
