Day 1: Overview and z/VM basics
- Overview:
- Hardware types that Linux for z runs on
- The basics of the Linux operating system on System z
- Touch on applications and database management systems that run on Linux for System z
- z/VM basics with hands on labs demonstrating some of the following:
- CP and CMS Commands and Fundamentals
- XEDIT Fundamentals
- REXX Basics
- This being a beginner class, we thought of covering REXX syntax structure, basic built-in functions and some examples
- PIPELINES Basics
- (same as above)
Day 2: Linux basics - a System z Perspective with hands on labs that include:
- Installing Linux guests ? (to give an overview on how install happens and install methods like VNC, SSH, etc ... we are not considering Linux install in a LPAR mode, only z/VM guest mode)
- Log in to a Linux system and set a user password
- Use Linux on-line documentation
- Manage Linux files and directories
- Describe the purpose of the shell
- Use the vi editor
- Execute common Linux commands
- Manage Linux processes
Days 3 and 4: Installing, Configuring and Servicing z/VM for Linux Guests
- This should include discussion and labs that demonstrate:
- Using the z/VM system editor
- Plan the initial installation of your z/VM system
- Modify the system configuration files
- Generate new entries in the system directory
- Configure the IOCP/ HCD / HCM definitions
- An explanation of why we use IOCP and how HCP/HCM helps us to configure IOCP
- IPL and manage the z/VM system
- Configure the TCP/IP service machines
- Discuss system management commands
- Presume an explanation of systems management at a high level, few basic commands, and not more than that
- Construct Saved Systems and Saved Segments
- Only explanation of what Segment Management, but not going over the commands
- Apply Service Processes to the z/VM system
- RSU and Corrective Service
- Execute the VM Service Commands for regeneration of the system
- We will explain the steps involving PARM disks, especially if CP service is involved; and we think, anything more is deeper than "intro" (i.e. like the VMSES process)
Day 5: Linux Implementation for System z (potentially may be too high level for beginner class - could expand days 3 and 4 to this day as well and drop implementations)
- Configure and recompile the Linux kernel
- Back up the system

One PC for each student staying for the full week.
Each PC should have the following set up:
To exclude intranet websites on a computer using the Windows Firewall
1. Using the administrator userid and password Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2. In the control panel, click Security Center.
3. Click Internet Options.
4. Click the Security tab
5. Click Restricted sites
6. Click Sites
7. Type w3.* in the input field labeled "Add this Web site to the zone:"
8. Click the Add button
9. Create Student id's for PC logins
Software: On these PC's, we would like to have:
- IBM Personal Communications with access to the IBM systems
- Putty-SSH ( a free telnet/SSH client )
