New year, new security threats – is your company ready?

Hardly a day goes by without some new alarm being sounded on corporate security breaches. Yesterday’s threats were most likely to be focused on operating systems; today, Web browser and server applications are the targets of choice. What remains constant is businesses forced to scramble to maintain established defenses while ramping up countermeasures against the ever-expanding array of cyberthreats. A quick response is critical - good security is expensive, but the costs of bad security can be greater by far in terms of compromised data and loss of client confidence.

Taking a proactive approach to cybersecurity

Cybersecurity is seen by most companies as strictly an IT problem, somehow separate from the overall operations of the business. But that view ignores the crucial human factor. IBM understands that effective security demands a more holistic approach, and addresses the issue with a series of solutions that reduce risk exposure across the business, encompassing employees, data, applications, networks and physical infrastructure.

Proactive monitoring and management of an organisation's network, server and endpoints are critical to staying one step ahead of emerging security threats. But technology-focused solutions are just a starting point. To gain maximum benefit from these solutions, a company’s IT staff must be trained to use them. That may seem like a given, but a survey of 3,500 technology professionals conducted by the Computing Technology Industry Association found that although almost three-quarters of IT managers identified security, firewalls and data privacy as a top organisational priority – yet only a little more than half felt their employees were proficient in those areas.

Training to stay ahead of the threat

Savvy managers know that including training as part of a system or software installation is essential to realising the benefits of the new solution. But when it comes to security, training is never finished. Cybercriminals are always on the lookout for new security vulnerabilities. Staying ahead of that threat demands both rigorous vigilance and ongoing education.

IBM can help make your enterprise security smarter with a full portfolio of solutions addressing the gamut of security concerns. Shouldn’t your IT people be as smart as the technology they use?
