Overview
The IBM Certified Trainer (ICT) program is a comprehensive program for Trainers' Preparation and Certification. This program can be applied almost in all industries that provide training and education, especially Information technology (IT) field. It aims to evaluate and assess Trainers' competencies that are required to deliver high quality Instruction and Training. IBM Certified Trainer Program focuses on Instructional skills without neglecting technical skills for IT Trainer.
The Trainer certification track validates skills using three proficiency levels and awards one of the following certification titles:
- IBM Authorized to Teach. (IAT)
- IBM Professional Trainer (IPT)
- IBM Training Expert (ITE)
Each Level has its requirements to earn the certificate of that level. These levels assure the ongoing progress of Trainers.
Benefits of IBM Certified Trainer
Each IBM Certified Trainer earns the right to display a certification mark. These certification marks are a statement of your Trainer's expertise and commitment to educational excellence. Also the program gives you the following benefits:
- Attend IBM's Instructors' Training workshop: every applicant for the IBM Certified Trainer program has the option to attend the training that IBM provide for Trainers according to the certification level.
- Authorization to teach at IBM Authorized Training centers: an IBM Certified Trainer has the higher priority to be selected to teach at IBM Authorized training centers and training projects supervised IBM.
- IBM Certification: every Instructor will receive a certification according to the level he is certified after succeeding to fulfill the requirements of each level.
- IBM Teaching License: IBM Teaching License is an identification card (ID) that has your title as an IBM Certified Trainer.
- IBM Trainers' Community: an integrated Community for IBM instructors that enables instructors to:

IBM Certified Trainer Competencies
1. IBM Authorized To Teach (IAT):
This level focuses on the Delivery Skills of the candidate Trainer, this level certifies that Instructors have the necessary knowledge and background that enables them to teach. Instructors in this level are expected to be able to:
- Prepare for training and Managing Learning Environment:
a. Apply the principles of adult education to classroom learnin
b. Implement practical tips for effective teaching - Use Communication and Presentation Skills and maintain credibility:
a. Implement practical tips for effective teaching
b. Apply cognitive strategies to improve learning
c. Discuss ethics in teaching. - Utilize facilitation skills and Employ Questioning Skills:
a. Use methods to improve motivation in the classroom
b. Illustrate the relation between cognitive factors and learning
c. Create, score and grade tests
d. Use a variety of questions in classroom
e. Use problem solving skills effectively in the classroom - Evaluate Learner Progress
a. Evaluate Learner performance during and after the Training.
- Use instructional methods properly
a. Apply cognitive strategies to improve learning
b. Define learning and discuss models of teaching based on different theories of learning
c. Implement practical tips for effective teaching
2. IBM Professional Trainer (ICT):
This level focuses on the Facilitation and supporting the learner Skills. In this level the Trainer must show the ability to facilitate learning and to support the different categories of learners. Trainers in this level are expected to be able to:
- Employ coaching skills.
- Manage difficult learners.
- Identify individual learner needs.
- Manage group and individual activity.
- Assess learner development
- Assess Other Trainers.
3. IBM Training Expert:
This level focuses on learning Design and Development skills. The IBM Training Expert should be able to achieve the following objectives:
- Perform training project analysis.
- Analyze training needs.
- Develop and adapt course material.
- Design assessment and monitoring mechanisms.
- Measure effectiveness of learning.
How to become an IBM Certified Trainer
Every IBM Certified Trainer Level has its requirements; this section describes the requirements of every Level.
1. IBM Authorized to Teach (IAT) :
Instructors applying for this Level should satisfy the following requirements:
- Apply to become an IBM Authorized to Teach:
a. Provide technical skills certification (according to the field of his/her specialty).
b. Prove Instructional experience for not less than a year. (you may prove this by any means like previous course evaluation or certificate of expertise etc...)
c. Trainers whose English is not their native language must provide an evidence of English Language Proficiency
d. Fill out IBM Authorized to Teach Application form. - Train the Trainer Course :
a. Attend Teaching Principles and practices course or gain equivalent knowledge. IBM offers this course in two formats:
i. Traditional classroom course (Course Code: CZ91)
ii. e-Learning Courseware (CZ911e)b. Pass written exam in teaching principles and practices course.

o Demonstrate teaching skills in front of observers specialized in Training and Education.
IBM Authorized to Teach Status:
Trainer should stay in this level not less than 2 years and not more than 3 years. (Level duration is: min: 2 year, max: 3 years)
If a Trainer has more than 3 years Experience in Teaching he has the option to apply directly to IBM Certified Trainer (second level) after completing the Criteria of this level. That is the time limit constraint is dropped.
If an Authorized Trainer passed the 3 year limit then he has the following options:
- Apply for IBM Certified Trainer (Level2)
- Stay in the current status (authorized) with annual renewal fees
2. IBM Professional Trainer (ICT):
Trainers applying for this Level should satisfy the following requirements:
- Become an IBM Authorized to Teach or provide evidence of possessing equivalent skills:
a. CompTIA Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+)
b. IBM Certified Instructor.
c. Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT)
d. Other equivalent certification. - Achieve a Score of 100 Points minimum on IBM Calculation sheet
o Provide documentation of previous technical training experience (no. of students, place, and student evaluation in recent classes).
- Apply for IBM Certified Trainer.
- Attend Train the trainer Course (advanced Level). (classroom course)
IBM Professional Trainer Status:
A Trainer must prove his excellence in Teaching skills & Experiences. Once an Instructor is certified by IBM he has the chance to teach broader range of courses related to his technical specialty. After 3 years at this level, Trainer becomes Senior IBM Professional Trainer
3. IBM Training Expert (ITE):
Trainers applying for this Level should satisfy the following requirements:
- Become an IBM Professional Trainer for not less than 3 years (Senior IBM Professional Trainer).
- Provide evidence on Instructional activities:
a. Professional growth.(higher certificates, Training Projects, etc...)
b. Number of students / hours taught.
c. Projects supervision
d. An Awarded certificate - Achieve a Score of 400 Points minimum on IBM Calculation sheet.
- Attend a training course on Learning Design and development.
- Successfully complete an assignment to demonstrate abilities in
a. training needs analysis
b. course design and development
c. designing training materials
d. measuring training effectiveness
IBM Training Expert Status:
One and Trainer is recognized by IBM as a Training Expert, he has the ability and skill to participate in certifying other Trainers. Participate in preparing instructional material for IBM. Participate in the preparation of training programs by IBM.
- IBM Consults its Experts (Instructors in this level) in its training plans.
- IBM Certified Training Experts are always requested to maintain a high level of performance in their training projects
