Centrax TCL turns to the cloud to enable its vision of growth through increased productivity and employee engagement


Newton Abbott, Devon - 07 Aug 2012: Centrax TCL, a manufacturing company specialising in compressor and turbine aerofoils, today announced how it has transformed its business using IBM (NYSE:IBM) cloud technology.  As a result of adopting a hybrid IBM SmartCloud environment, the company has been able to quickly and cost effectively provision email, calendaring and instant messaging capabilities to 160 direct factory employees.  This has allowed Centrax TCL’s entire workforce to communicate and share ideas online and has resulted in enhanced employee engagement.  

Whilst email has always been operational for all office employees, it was too expensive to provide to all Centrax TCL’s factory employees until the availability of this solution.  Nick Sanderson, IT Systems Architect, Centrax TCL stated, “We were able to provision the cloud based email for the factory employees at about 25% of the cost of the on premise email.  By having all employees connected, we have improved our ability to respond to customer requirements and market demand”. 

Centrax TCL worked with IBM business partner, Kelros, to integrate factory employees to their overall email platform by simply adding them as new cloud users. Factory employees can now easily work with electronic reports that reduce the time required for report preparation as well as keeping down printing costs. 

Emma Basson, Sales Manager, Kelros stated, “Email can be accessed through the intranet at computer terminals that are dotted around the factory floor or even from home via a browser.  In the future, this could extend to being on a variety of different devices”.

The solution is also helping Centrax TCL with its vision for growth.  There are many new developments being planned within the company where email for factory employees is key for success.  For example, the manufacturing planning system can automatically send email notifications to employees when a scrap threshold is reached, therefore ensuring a streamlined process and minimising waste.  This also helps with managing orders and vendor approvals.  Centrax TCL is also investigating the use of electronic payslips that will have a significant saving on paper and other related processes.

The advantages of the cloud are being recognised by UK small and medium businesses with many companies focusing on how the cloud can improve business outcomes (1).  Baiju McCubbins, Portfolio Leader, SmartCloud for Social Business, IBM said, “Centrax TCL has been able to use the cloud to unite its workforce and streamline its business by being able to offer alternative ways of working for its factory employees”. 

Darral Saw, Process Technician agreed, “Using email to communicate with my colleagues on other shifts means that I don’t need to come into work earlier or stay late simply to pass on information”.  This ease of engagement also extends to apprentices at the company who are able to use the IBM SmartCloud to speed up their qualification process which in turn enables Centrax TCL to provide a higher quality of service to their customers.  HR information, such as Health and Safety policies and procedures can also be more easily viewed and shared.   

The need for a fully engaged workforce is highlighted by IDC Manufacturing Insights, in its EMEA Manufacturing 2012 Top 10 Predictions (2), which state that the ‘workforce will have to be engaged to the business, at any level including workers on the plant floor’.  IBM SmartCloud is providing Centrax TCL with email communications for its factory employees.  This is a first step in their transformational journey in the manufacturing industry.

Other platforms such as Microsoft Exchange and Google Apps for Business were also considered by Centrax TCL.
