Welcome to the second Software as a Service newsletter of 2009. For those of us who have been involved in the SaaS space for a number of years, it's hard not to be excited by the amount of interest and attention the area is getting right now. With so much news about cloud computing I wanted to make sure you didn't miss two important updates from IBM.
First of all, in April we started offering a number of leading IBM software products in production on the Amazon Web Services cloud. For the first time you can build your SaaS solutions on IBM software like DB2, WebSphere sMash, and WebSphere Portal and pay hourly for what you use. This is a great way for those interested in launching a SaaS application to get started quickly and minimize your initial outlay and risk. Start small and scale as demand grows, keeping your costs in line with revenue. To find out more and get started, visit the IBM page on Amazon Web Services.
Secondly, on 16 June IBM announced a set of commercial "cloud" services and integrated products for the enterprise. The IBM Smart Business portfolio includes three "on-ramps," or ways to quickly deploy the cloud model:
- IBM Smart Business standardized services on the IBM cloud
- Smart Business private cloud services behind the firewall built by IBM (run by IBM or the client)
- IBM CloudBurst workload optimized systems, for clients who want to build to their own cloud with pre-integrated hardware and software
You can find out more about these announcements and what IBM is doing in this exciting area at ibm.com/ibm/cloud/.
Enjoy the newsletter.
Sincerely,
