IBM Systems and Technology in the Public Sector - Helping to drive the transformation of services through world class infrastructure solutions
A smarter planet requires a smarter infrastructure
The issues are well-known and global: A financial crisis, climate disruption., energy geopolitics, food supply hazards, security threats.
What they show is that we're all interconnected like never before: economically, socially and technically. When a crisis occurs on one part of the planet, it can bring problems to another part, within days or even hours. As an interconnected planet we have to infuse intelligence into our infrastructures, technologies and ways of working. So much of how the world works must become much smarter. But how much smarter?
Consider what's coming: hundreds of billions of smart things - sensors, cameras, cars, shipping containers, intelligent appliances, RFID tags by the hundreds of millions - all becoming interconnected. This will enable new, highly flexible ways of interacting with citizens, customers and employees from any device, anywhere, anytime.
The resulting volume of data also promises to provide insight and new intelligence for resolving some of our biggest problems, but only if we can process it and make sense of it in real time.
IBM Systems and Technology Group is committed to making a significant contribution to the delivery of world class public services via cost effective, flexible and secure IT infrastructure solutions for an interconnected smarter planet.
If we are going to realise the enormous potential of a smarter planet, we have to reinvent the IT and infrastructures of the 21st century in the same way that we industrialised our factory floors in the 20th-making it more efficient, more dynamic and secure whilst being less complex and costly.
SOA
Often, the first step to an agile organisation starts with connecting your applications in a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Service oriented" software offers the opportunity to unlock business services from the underlying technology so that software can be changed and reused flexibly-at a fraction of the cost of developing it from scratch
Virtualisation
Virtualisation can help you reinvent your data centers by dramatically improving server utilisation and reducing floor space usage. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is transforming its systems through consolidation, standardisation and virtualisation. This has resulted in a 150% increase in processing capacity.
Service Management
Control all of your IT assets from one point, gain greater visibility into your system as a whole and grant your users control. It's possible... with service management.
Security
A smart infrastructure assumes security capabilities that are integrated across the organisation, yet specialised enough to address a myriad of threats.
Dynamic Infrastructure (PDF, 351KB)
Our strategy for a dynamic infrastructure may include asset and service management, virtualisation, energy efficiency, resiliency, security and flexible sourcing options.
Green technologies
With energy costs eating up significant portions of the IT operations budget, green technologies are critical to any smart infrastructure strategy.
