IBM Product Lifecycle Management Express for Machining
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is a strategic approach to creating and managing product-related intellectual capital, from conception to retirement. It improves product development processes and the ability to use product-related information to make better decisions and deliver greater value to your customers. It enables collaboration across organizational and geographic boundaries, improving supply-chain communication, business process efficiency and innovation capability.
The goal
IBM Product Lifecycle Management Express for Machining enables you to accelerate your time to market and lower the cost of new product development by improving the integration between initial concept design and manufacturing, ensuring the manufacturability of a new product much earlier in the development process.
The advantage
Product Lifecycle Management Express for Machining is tailored to the needs of the numerical control (NC) machining user who needs to prepare machine tools to "cut the parts" that have been designed usually by another company.
Based on IBM CATIA V5 NC manufacturing applications and SMARTEAM TeamPDM (developed by Dassault Systèmes), it allows the machine tool programmer to import the geometry from the computer-aided design (CAD) into CATIA and create the NC programs that control the machine tools in a highly automated way.
This solution includes advanced machining features, supports machining operations in an integrated tool set and is supported by over 200 local PLM Business Partner firms backed by IBM.
Benefits
Product Lifecycle Management Express for Machining improves productivity and significantly reduces the number of machining errors that can cause scrap and re-work. If the product is also designed using CATIA V5 design applications, design for manufacturability can be considered much earlier in the development process — eliminating costly errors.
SMARTEAM enables the manufacturer to collaborate with the designer much earlier in the product development process so that together they can create, simulate and optimize the manufacturing process from conceptual design through shop floor programming.
