In many industries—manufacturing, distribution, retail and others—knowing the exact location of inventory as well as mobile assets is becoming increasingly important to running an efficient, agile, competitive business. This applies to managing the movement of finished goods through a supply chain, raw materials through a manufacturing process or reusable containers and fixtures through facilities. With tight profit margins and even tighter operating budgets—not to mention a fast-changing competitive landscape—manufacturers, distributors and retailers must quickly deliver the exact amount and mix of goods to the right location at the precise moment they're needed.
Traditionally, barcodes were the only mechanism to identify and track the contents of cases and pallets moving through the supply chain. Now companies are seeking more specific, up-to-the moment information about product whereabouts, as well as faster, more flexible and more automated ways to collect and share that information. For these reasons, they are increasingly turning to radio frequency identification (RFID).
