In Focus: Preventing data loss–easily
In an era characterized by razor-thin margins and tight budgets, many businesses risk everything by not continuously backing up business-critical data. If data isn't backed up, it can't be restored. Sooner or later, say the experts, most businesses will experience an event or outage that results in serious data loss. The cause can be something as catastrophic as a fire or natural disaster, or as mundane as human error. In some industries, says Infonetics Research, downtime costs can equal up to 16 percent of revenue. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration reports that 60 percent of companies that lose data will shut down within six months of a disaster.
Here's the good news: data loss scenarios are almost entirely avoidable with IBM's Comprehensive Data Protection Solution Express. This special configuration of industry–leading data protection hardware and software prevents data loss throughout an organization by continuously and automatically backing up data. The solution, which is designed for nontechnical people to manage, allows critical files and information to be recovered from any point in time–no matter how severe the disaster or how limited in-house technical knowledge may be.
What you get
IBM Comprehensive Data Protection Solution Express includes hardware and software components designed to keep data secure across multiple locations. Tivoli® Storage Manager FastBack—or TSM FastBack—forms the foundation of the bundle's data protection capabilities. TSM FastBack allows rapid restoration of any amount of Windows data following any type of data loss, making it ideal for organizations that rely on IBM DB2®, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and SAP. What's more, it works across multiple hardware devices and locations, and is capable of restoring data to any previous point in time.
IBM System StorageTM DS3000 (or IBM System Storage DS4000 disk systems) continuously backs up data in—whether in one location or in several branch offices. To prevent the problem of backing up multiple instances of the same information, DS3000 storage devices eliminate, or deduplicate, redundant data.
Here's how it works: application, database and e-mail servers connect to IBM System X® server(s) hosting TSM FastBack software. IBM System StorageTM DS3000 functions as local disk-based backup repository. Data from distributed locations such as remote offices is then efficiently replicated over the wide area network (WAN) and aggregated in a central System X server with TSM FastBack software to ensure rapid disaster recovery if an outage occurs in one of the remote offices.
Automatic backups reduce the need for IT oversight, while easy-to-use features help ensure that data can be restored with minimal effort by nontechnical employees. Based on the parameters you define, recovery can be prioritized by importance to a particular business or business unit, so information essential to doing business—relating to customers, finances and operations—is up and running first.
This type of holistic, automated approach to data back up and recovery helps midsized companies get back to business fast by recovering files in minutes after an interruption. And because the solution is designed to support multiple locations, organizations with branch offices and mobile employees can be assured of continuous productivity across locations.
Designed for the bottom line
IBM Comprehensive Data Protection Solution Express can help you meet Service Level Agreement (SLA) objectives and deliver near-continuous 24x7 availability of valuable files—including email and mission-critical application data. This special data protection configuration is designed to pay for itself in a year, thanks to its ability to virtually eliminate revenue loss due to downtime of Windows applications and data. In addition to lowering infrastructure costs, the solution now offers highly competitive pricing.
